Monday September 12, 2014!

A 33-year-old man has died at a hospital after begin struck by a hit-and-run driver while changing a tire in Hollow Hills, Hollow Hills Sheriff said Monday.

The victim was changing a flat tire in the 8000 block of Route 27 in Hills County around 9:30 a.m. when he was struck. The vehicle, a red or maroon Toyota, left the scene without stopping, said Hollow Hills Sheriff, Lee Doyle.

Witnesses say after the vehicle hit the man, the driver sped off.

Distraught family members came to the scene Tuesday morning to see the intersection where Thomas Higgins was hit.

His wife, Sandra Higgins, spoke through tears, saying, How could someone tear my husband apart and leave him on the road? They not only killed him, but they’re also tearing me apart.

His older sister, Jennifer Williams, says, He was in Hollow Hills seeing his friend, Dennis Moore, last night. He was a good guy, always helping out the family with bills.

Mack Hillerman, who worked a construction job with him from time to time, said, He was out of town to pick up money from an Army buddy; I think he was coming home.

He added, It’s very sad. His wife is left to raise three young kids alone.

Area residents say driver's race down Route 27 and don’t obey speed limits.
