INTERVIEW WITH M.T. LOTT
How did you create the character of Annabelle the Fart Fairy?
I'm a dad, and my two kids -- one boy, one girl -- love silly and slightly gross stories. Think Captain Underpants type books. My daughter loved fairy books and movies when she was little. She would constantly ask me to tell her fairy stories before bed. When I ran out of cute fairy stories, I created the Annabelle character. I probably told her fifty stories before I thought, "Hey, this might make a good character for a book."
Did your daughter help you write the book?
She was my beta reader, for sure. I also got a few ideas from her. Once I was stuck in part of the book and I asked her what she thought should happen. She had a great idea, and I put it in the book.
When did you start writing books?
I've written since I was in junior high school, but I never published anything. I was an off-and-on writer. Once my kids started reading, I thought about writing books for children, but I never had a good idea until Annabelle.
What do you like to do for fun?
Surfing, gardening, and hiking.
What's next for Annabelle?
I might start working on books about some of the other Forgotten Fairies. I think maybe Fevrile deserves a chance to tell his story.

Chapter One: The Gift
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANNABELLE,
everyone shouted as I blew out the candles on my strawberry pie. I was turning 505 years old. Fairies live so long that they only celebrate their birthdays every five years.
Thank you, everyone,
I said, beaming. It had been five years since the Queen made me a fart fairy at the Great Selecting. And, even though my fart fairy knowledge had helped save the world from a gigantic asteroid, I still was not very happy being a fart fairy.
But, I didn’t want to think about that now. All of my family and friends were here to help celebrate my first birthday since I turned 500 years old and became a real, grown up fairy.
My old friends Sadie, Cynthia and Jane were here.
Jane, a rose fairy, brought several bunches of roses to decorate the party. Sadie, a daffodil fairy, brought a few pots with tiny daffodils blooming in them. Cynthia, a citrus fairy, brought fresh-squeezed orange juice for everyone to drink.
Some of my new friends were at the party too. They were part of the Forgotten Fairies Club I had helped start back when I first became a fart fairy and was looking to make friends with other fairies who had been assigned disgusting, thankless jobs.
Bob, the Black Widow fairy, was there, sitting in a corner, trying to stay out of any bright lights. Reggie, a flea fairy, was bouncing around with excitement, his tremendous height and bulk shaking the ground each time he landed. Rosalina, the snot fairy, was sitting patiently waiting for her slice of strawberry pie.
And, of course, my mom, my dad and my brother, Fevrile, were there too. Fevrile and I were twins, but he had his birthday party yesterday. My parents always had separate birthday parties for us so that we could each have our own special day.
After I blew out the candles, we all had slices of pie and sipped orange juice and talked for a while. Eventually, we came to my favorite part: Opening my presents!
I got some cool stuff. Mainly clothes and jewelry, and Bob gave me a charm bracelet with six different venomous spiders on it. It was really awesome, but I saw my mom smirk at it disapprovingly. Of course, I put it on my wrist right away.
Finally, it was time to open Fevrile’s present. It was tradition that I opened his present last, just like he opened my present last. I
