Djinn
Berlin, Germany
James McCarthy, an ordinary man with an extraordinary resonance tied to desire. James walked forward with a firm pace through the back of a dark alleyway. It rained recently and the scent of blood hung fresh in the air while his expensive shoes clacked against the stone pavement.
Poor chap,
he said. You look ill.
James stopped a few feet from a young man struggling to maintain his breath with a punctured lung. A wooden stake laid jammed through his chest. He scraped the stone with his fingernails in an effort to push himself up against a brick wall at the edge. James stared into the young man’s eyes and held out his hand.
I can smell it on you, you understand. You have something I want.
What…are you?
the crippled man responded.
You’re wasting time, lad. I can heal you, and I’ll even let you live.
W…what?
All I ask for in return is your resonance. You don’t need those powers, do you?
The young man clutched his chest as his breathing became more and more labored. His expression turned from fear to confusion as he looked up at James with eyes nearly shut. Time was running out.
It’s simple. Just shake my hand, and our transaction will be complete.
A moment of hesitation passed, though not much more before latching onto James’ hand and he felt the power surging through him. A resonance tied to wood. He could sense the vibrations within the buildings. It wasn’t a powerful resonance but definitely worth his time.
Thank you,
James said.
After which, he used his newly acquired resonance to thrust the stake out and watched as the wound sealed up. Another satisfied client.
A deal is a deal,
he said. I’ll let you live.
Th…thank you,
the young man replied.
I didn’t say for how long though.
Wait. What?
In a split second, he jabbed it through the skull with the force of an athlete, using his wood resonance to augment his own physical strength. This poor lad squandered his power. Never knew how to bring out its full potential. James turned tail and waltzed off.
Always check the fine print.
Chapter 1
Chat with the Chancellery
Berlin, Germany
Simon Bogart. Founder of the UN.C. The United Commonwealth is a guild for resonance users that reports to the British Government. Simon also happened to be the department chair and liaison to other governments. In this case, the German Federal Chancellery, located in Berlin. Simon stood in the center of several circular rows of seats that surrounded him. Faces of politicians from across Germany eyed him with a measure of distrust. Miles stood guard from the edge of the room, cowl and all. Good lord, he didn’t have to dress so gaudy.
Has the Chancellery decided?
Simon asked.
"I don’t favor reporting
