Hope - Part 1 written by: Aguirre April 21, 2003 is the day after Easter, and a teenage girl is sitting in her room listening to Eminem. This is Amanda Berry, and later today she will become the second person to be kidnapped, imprisoned and repeatedly raped by Ariel Castro.
The story moves in a first-person, present-tense diary format, similar to the one that Amanda kept during her captivity. She talks about her working class background, where she lives in the top floor of a duplex with her hard-working mother, Louwana Berry. The house below is occupied by her sister, Beth, who is having a serious argument with her husband Teddy. Teddy is also Amanda's boss at the local Burger King, so Amanda decides to stay out of his way while the couple is fighting.
Amanda is a pretty typical teen. She's thinking about college. She's dating a jerk. She's not in the mood to work today and considers calling in sick, but tomorrow is her 17th birthday and she's got a party planned at home. Avoiding Teddy, she decides to walk to work. Because it's right after Easter, the restaurant is quiet that evening, so one of her colleagues agrees to cover for her while she leaves over.
On the way home, a van pulls up beside her. The driver identifies himself as the father of Anthony, a boy who had previously worked at the Burger King. He offers her a ride home which she accepts, and on the way home they stop at his house. He takes her on a strange tour of his home, at one point inviting him to peek through a hole in a door at his roommate
. Amanda spies a young woman sitting on a bed, which she will later discover is the first kidnap victim, Michelle Knight.
The man, who is Ariel Castro, leads Amanda to a room upstairs where he traps her
