    Once upon a time in a faraway land, there was a Green Kingdom, and next to it, a sky-blue river ran and a mighty forest stood. Why was it called the Green Kingdom? Because of the many trees, plants and flowers that grew there. The people who lived in the kingdom dressed in shades of green and adorned themselves with leaves. Girls wove wreaths of flowers and made strings of beads from berries. Flowers even grew on the roofs of the houses. The Green Kingdom was so beautiful that the people who lived there never wanted to leave. They were fortunate to know neither war nor sorrow. King Alexander and Queen Rose lived in love and harmony; their son Prince Alexander, named in honor of his father, grew big and strong, much to the delight of his parents and everyone in the kingdom.

    Alexander the Second

    Prince Alexander loved animals. He played with animals in the forest and brought many of them to the castle. The king, who at first was angry, had finally resigned himself to having animals around.

    Alexander had two best friends – a horse named Ares and a hedgehog named Johnny. Ares was both unbelievably strong and brave. He was also the most beautiful horse in the kingdom – black as coal with white specks and a white tail. Most importantly, Ares was devoted to Alexander. People said that Ares would follow him anywhere, even into a fire or the river.

    Johnny the hedgehog, on the other hand, was rather prudent and cautious, always on his guard. The hedgehog amused the prince greatly, especially when something surprised him, which happened often. Astonishment would make Johnny open his little eyes wide, furrow his little forehead and open his little mouth in the shape of the letter O. The prince adored
