International selling author, Russ Crossley writes science fiction and fantasy, and mystery/suspense under the name R.G. Crossley. His latest science fiction satire set in the far future, Revenge of the Lushites, is a sequel to Attack of the Lushites released in 2011. Sheila Culpepper yawned as she shuffled across the cool ceramic tiles on the kitchen floor toward the door to the pantry. The kitchen cupboard where they kept her favorite full-fiber breakfast cereal was again empty.
Her grey eyes drifted toward Bernie, her husband of fifteen years, sitting on a burnished steel stool, topped with a crimson, mushroom-shaped cushion, his narrow shoulders hunched over as he read the morning news on the virtual screen hovering over the speckled granite island. A half-eaten bowl of her cereal floating in a bath of almond milk sat untouched on the island to his left. She rolled her eyes. He wasted more than he ate.
Will Bernie ever remember to restock the cupboards or will I be doing this for the rest of my days? she wondered. Her attention shifted to the cupboard door.
Open,
she said, pulling her robe tighter about her narrow waist.
