Chapter 1

I'd said it. After it had been on my mind for so long, and after being so afraid of voicing my feelings, I'd actually said it. I stared at Jaden who hadn't yet reacted to my words. I wondered what might have been going through his head to hear me say that I might be falling for him.

Jaden burst out laughing. That was much funnier than the hare and tortoise joke.

I was puzzled by his reaction, but I guess it made sense. Things were strange enough between us, and I'd said that I disliked him enough times that he probably wouldn't believe it. I nervously joined him in laughter.

Was it funny? I said.

Yes, very funny, said Jaden.

I'm glad you found it funny.

Next time, try to get the same level of quality for your stories. You said your synopsis was turned down. What exactly are you doing by the desk every night? Why be so stubborn? Just go to sleep, and give your mind a rest. If I sat down at that desk like you, I'd probably have ten scenarios written already.

I found myself getting angrier as I heard his words. This was him, the Jaden I was used to.

Really, said Jaden. I'm not sure why Michael hired you. It makes no sense to me.

I must be crazy, I said.

What?

I said I must be crazy!

I slammed my hand on the table, and rose to my feet. Before I could leave, Jaden called out to me. He held his hands in the air, and spread his arms.

Just remember, said Jaden. I love you. Just as much as you love me, just that much.

He started laughing, and I went to my room. I was crazy. That was the only explanation. How could I like someone like him? I was just out of my mind for a brief moment. I was losing my senses because of how pressured I felt. It must have been the sex. I was confusing lust for love. To like someone like him made no sense.

I'd spent the morning working on my synopsis, and finishing my cleaning duties. By lunch, Jaden arrived back from his agency. I'd prepared lunch, and we started to eat, before he dropped a bomb on me. He wanted me to do another interview tomorrow.

Why an interview all of a sudden? I said.

It's not much, said Jaden. Just take some pictures, and answer some questions. You've done it before.

Well, I did but I didn't think I'd have to do it again.

It's not a press conference like before. It'll be at our house. Don't do it if you don't want to.

What if I don't? Publicity will be bad, your movie won't do well, and then who's going to pay my salary?

You're worried about your salary? I could pay that for the next hundred years even if the movie flopped.

But where are they going to shoot the interview? I asked.

They said it'll be outside, and in the living room, but let's clean upstairs just in case.

Who can clean all that?

Also, I'll be there with you at the interview, so don't worry, and just relax.

Don't you think I should go to the beauty salon?

Jaden scoffed. Your face is your face. Does it change if you go there?

Do you think it's for me? It's for your sake. Would you be happy if people say your wife is filthy? I'll have to use a facial mask tonight.

By the time the day was over, I was already exhausted. I lay down in bed with a facial mask. The idea of doing an interview again was a little daunting, but if it would help Jaden, I didn't mind. Even though I ended up angry with him, and fought with him, it was still like this at the end. I wanted to help him. My phone started ringing, and I answered it swiftly. It was Julie.

Hayley, if Jaden asked you to do an interview, don't do it, said Julie.

I heard Dennis say something, and then Julie told him to be quiet because I had to know. I wasn't sure what they were bickering about, but waited for her to finally speak again.

It's because you don't know, but your husband has been having an affair, said Julie.

I sat up instantly. What? Who's saying that?

Whoever it is, it doesn't matter. The rumour going around is that he's secretly meeting some designer lady. That's what the interview is for, to help clear that up. How can Jaden do this? Anyway, you should be careful.

Listen, Jaden's not the kind of person to do that. I know who that woman is, and there's nothing going on between them. You better not go around talking nonsense, and spreading rumours about this.

Even though I said that, my heart felt differently. I went to sleep with a nagging worry, and in the morning, I remained upset. As Jaden helped me move some of the furniture from my room to his, I felt like getting back at him.

I'm not doing the interview, I said.

Why not? said Jaden.

Because I don't want to.

I ignored Jaden, and headed downstairs. I poured myself a glass of water, and he just called after me. As I took a drink, he came to a stop next to me.
