About this ebook

Action, terror and a heroine with second sight! You'll find all of that and more in White Witch. This novella opens Lyn Horner's award-winning Texas Devlins series.

Jessie Devlin is what her Irish ancestors might call a "white witch." She has a disturbing ability to glimpse the future. When she foresees Chicago on fire, it's a soul-searing experience. Far worse is the terrible night in 1871 when she and her family and thousands of Chicagoans run for their lives from the towering flames. Worst of all are the horrific nightmares Jessie suffers for months after the destruction.

However, when Jessie’s dreams suddenly begin showing her a strange man with gentle, loving eyes who saves her from a fiery death, she becomes convinced they are destined to meet and fall in love. But will her father give her time to find her dream hero or will he force her into marriage with the wrong man? How can she save herself from such a fate?

Author

Lyn Horner

Lyn Horner resides in Texas with her husband and several beloved cats. Trained in the visual arts, Lyn worked as a fashion illustrator and art instructor. After quitting work to raise her children, she took up writing as a creative outlet. This hobby grew into a love of historical research and the crafting of passionate romances based on that research. A member of Romance Writers of America, Yellow Rose RWA, and Hearts Through History RWA, Horner is the author of the award winning Texas Devlins (formerly Texas Druids) trilogy. This western saga features three uniquely gifted siblings, descendents of ancient Irish Druids. In addition, a novella titled WHITE WITCH serves as a prelude to the trilogy. This work of historical fiction depicts the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and showcases Jessie Devlin’s clairvoyant ability. The author knows such a psychic power truly exists, having experienced prophetic dreams herself.

PREFACE

––––––––

Dear reader,

Years ago, when I lived outside Chicago, I grew fascinated by the story of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In fact, the tragedy inspired my first attempt at writing historical fiction, which led to many happy hours of research at the local library. There was no internet in those days, more’s the pity. Kidding! I love the feel and scent of lovely old history books.

The novella you are about to read is an updated version of that clumsy short story that eventually led to my Texas Devlins series. In it you will meet Jessie and Tye Devlin, the two eldest of three highly unusual siblings. Rose, the youngest, lives apart from her family for reasons to be revealed later.

Offspring of Irish immigrants, the Devlins are descended from the Old Ones – ancient Druids of myth and legend. Each is blessed with a unique psychic power.

White Witch showcases Jessie’s precognitive ability. It also offers a suspenseful story of survival, carrying Jessie, Tye and their father through the terrible Chicago Fire. One particularly harrowing scene from the fire sets up events to come, leading to Jessie’s prophetic dreams, dreams that send her on a dangerous quest for love in Darlin’ Irish.

I hope you enjoy the tale. ~ Lyn Horner

CHAPTER ONE

Chicago; August 1871

Jessie hiked up her skirts and stepped into the cool water of Lake Michigan, wading out until the gentle waves lapped at her knees. It felt wonderful on her sweaty skin. She wished she could immerse her whole body but didn’t relish walking home in sopping wet clothes.

Jess, you’d best be careful, her brother Tye called from a few feet away. There could be a drop-off.

I know. I’ll not go any farther out. And take your own advice, brother dear. She glanced at him enviously. Having stripped away his shirt and rolled up his pant legs, he
