CAT
DRAWING THE CAT
When I draw cats, I first make the oval for the swing of the head, then the cross line for swing of the eyes; then I start with the eyes. In drawing or painting the human head, the artist always starts with the eyes to catch the expression and it is the same with animals. Catch the expression in the cat’s eyes first, then block in the nose, mouth and chin, forehead, and swing of the ears. Next block in the fore paws, body, hind paws and tail.
The ears occupy a large space at the side and rear of the head. They revolve as on an axis: forward when at rest, upright when alert, and backward when angry or frightened. The hearing apparatus is inside the skull, the outside ear being a protection and a decoration as well. I consider cat’s ears charming and elusive.
