They say you can't go home. I'm not entirely sure who ‘they’ are, but in my case it was more true than most. When I went off to college my parents moved out of my childhood home and took off across the country for suburbs. They wanted to chase new jobs and the McMansion dream.

So where did that leave me? Well nearly twenty-two and living with my parents again. But it wasn't home though, oh no. I was living in cookie cutter hell on Earth.

Dalton! a voice screamed, waking me from a pleasant sexual dream. This was our new morning ritual. My mother would scream at me from downstairs and I would awake still horny and confused.

What? I yelled back, rubbing my eyes and looking at the alarm clock. God damn, it wasn't even eight yet.

Get up and find a job! she shouted back and I groaned.

Love you sweetie, Mom added then I listened for the shutting of the front door and the rev of her car engine before I promptly fell back asleep.

I had only been here for two weeks and every day it was the same old tune. Find a job Dalton,' or How many jobs have you applied for today? Blah blah blah. It's not like I wasn't trying, shit, I had tried for six months before I was forced to move here.

Here was Lakeview Groves, an artificial hometown that wasn't mine. It was full of identical houses with vibrant green lawns and money to burn. The whole suburb was an enclave of Stepford monstrosities.  I’m pretty sure even the lake was man made. I also didn't know a single other person, and I couldn't even find a job.

I so desperately wanted to go back to New York. In fact I dreamed about it. Four years of college and I had loved every second of that dirty, busy city. New York had felt alive, all the people, the arts, the sights and sounds. Here was like being trapped in a drywall coffin.

However like many idealistic young arts majors I got my diploma and suddenly realized that those engineering kids were on to something. There were just no jobs after I spent four years learning about poetry and alternative sculpture.

    Fancy that.

After I stopped being able to pay my rent I had to do the unthinkable. That’s why I was here in Lakeview, and I was not happy about it.

A few hours later and I was awake again, this time on my own schedule. I yawned away the fogginess and looked around my room. It wasn't much, more of an attic really. Even in my parents suburban McMansion I didn't get a proper room. Oh no,
