ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Jennie Msangi and her husband, Gill, have committed their lives to serve God by serving others. Together they have 5 children and 12 grandchildren. Their youngest child, Mary Faith, still lives at home and is active with her parents in community outreach and ministry.

Jennie is a graduate of Ashland University in Ohio with a degree in Education Administration and a graduate certificate in Christian Ministry from Liberty University. She also holds a BA in Business Management. She has over 30 years of social services experience. She says that STAND UP! was developed to reach individuals and families in the community who may not otherwise be aware of available resources or have the tools needed to live prosperously and achieve overall well being.

Gill is from Tanzania, East Africa. His personal life experiences and charismatic personality have been integral in sharing this initiative through a global perspective. African symbols and sayings have been interwoven throughout STAND UP! to enrich the participant’s experience. The symbol selected to portray STAND UP! is borrowed from the Ashanti tribe in Ghana. It stands for life transformation. This symbol combines two symbols into one. The Morning Star which can mean a new start to the day, placed inside the wheel, representing movement as we STAND UP! and Step Toward A New Direction Using Principles.

INTRODUCTION

I have to admit that I had a pretty great childhood. My dad worked hard for our family and my mother stayed home with me and my brothers and sister. I did well in school, and I had great friends. We lived in a big, old farm house and always had plenty of food and fun.

Yet, out of all of my four siblings, who had the same upbringing as I had, I ended up living in situations where I was exposed to poverty, violence and crime and when most of the people I grew up with never left our small town I have had the opportunity to travel not only throughout the United States but also to travel abroad.

However, I acknowledge that without all of those events I wouldn’t be the person that I am today. Everything I have experienced has led me to this point in my life and I am thankful that I can pull from those experiences and share some strategies with you in the hopes that if you are in similar situations that you will be able to STAND UP! And move in a new direction towards prosperous living.

Now I could choose to state that I was qualified to develop STAND UP! because I have a college degree or that I have over 30 years of experience serving families through social service agencies. However, I feel that my true qualifications for developing STAND UP! are not based upon the education or experience that I gained in the classroom or office but upon the education and experience I have gained in life.

I have raised five children over the course of my life. I have lived on the welfare system in the past, I have faced eviction because I couldn’t pay the rent, I have had to work two or three jobs at a time to pay the bills, I have had to take the bus because I couldn’t afford a car, or if I did have a car there were times where I just couldn’t afford the insurance or the gas.
