About this ebook

1950s Liverpool. In the tight-knit Irish Catholic community of the Four Streets, two girls are growing up. One is motherless—and hated by the cold woman who is determined to take her dead mother's place. The other is hiding a dreadful secret which she dare not let slip to anyone, lest it rips the heart out of the community. What can the people of the Four Streets do when a betrayal at the very heart of their world comes to light?

What a powerful book. I can't wait to read the next two books in the trilogy. Dorries has created characters whom you can see with your mind's eye and whose tears are your tears. In this small area of Liverpool, a predominantly Irish Catholic populace makes do with little or no money. However, they are happy in all senses and when ill luck befalls one of them they all feel it. Anything else I say will spoil it for you so let me just say that it's a must read.

An absorbing family saga set during the 1950s in Liverpool.I found it an easy and well written read. The story flows along and kept me turning the pages. The characters are interesting, engaging and well rounded. It deals with some delicate issues with sensitivity and it is not overly descriptive or graphic. There is a great sense of community. The struggles of every day life are depicted insightfully and with finesse. It's a story of not only making ends meet, but how neighbours pull together in times of adversity. It revealed their fighting spirit! I particularly like the chapter where food was collected, cooked and then shared out between the streets.A realistic and stirring tale which I very much enjoyed. Many thanks Lovereading.co.uk for sending me an advance reading copy to read and review.
