You die, I survive
Wake up, sleepyheads! Come on!
He shouted at the two boys, rhythmically clapping his hands.
Aleister jumped against the metal back of his chair. He squinted, blinking his eyes several times at the blinding light of the fluorescent lamp that was dangling a few inches above his head.
What the f...
He stammered, twisting his mouth into a grimace of disgust. Eventually, he managed to focus on the figure who had just spoken. It was a man wearing a pair of worn suspenders and a pair of weird knickerbockers. The boy addressed him sharply: Who the hell are you?
Instinctively, he tried to lean forward, but his arms – flabby and dangling along his hips – did not respond to his commands. He tried to stand up, but even his legs gave no sign of reaction. Why can't I move? What happened to me?
Stuart was sitting opposite Aleister on the same line of the floor, still struggling to unravel the fog
. He just muttered: What time is it? I'm not feeling very well...
He added after drooling a bit of saliva. "By the way, who are you?"
You're finally awake, guys!
– The stranger spoke again, turning around their chairs – "We're running out of time and I must give you some bad news right away: one of you is going to die. I know, I know, it sucks but... what are you going to do? He pretended to shield himself, shrugging his shoulders. He raised his hands in a theatrical gesture.
Accounting issues, so to speak..."
Excuse me?!
What? Is this a joke?
– Aleister was already trying to set himself free – Did you drug me somehow?
The thing is
– The man spoke again without noticing the interruption – I don't want to decide all by myself. I leave you alone half an hour, so you can think about a bunch of reasons why you should be kept alive. Who will be more original and compelling wins, ok?
Whaaat?
Stuart reached a slight falsetto, goggling at the same time.
Oh, yes, I forgot this one: if I were you, I would not waste the next thirty minutes trying to escape! See you later, buddies!
The weird man exclaimed, wrinkling his nose and snapping his suspenders. He looked quite satisfied and excited. A second later, he disappeared behind a heavy door in the far corner of the room.
Ok, guys, nice joke! Now, show yourselves, come on!
Aleister shouted. He sounded quite amused, after all.
Who are you talking to?
Stuart asked him. His voice was broken by nervousness.
Clearly, this is a joke by my college mates!
If this is the case, what have I got to do with it? I don't know you! We're not attending the same school, you jerk!
Stuart shouted in frustration.
Screw you!
They both kept staring at the heavy door for endless seconds, waiting. From the outside, there came no noise, nor did voices or chuckles. Aleister swallowed a couple of times. His salivation was out of control.
Oh no...
It was Stuart to break the silence first.
What?
They were talking about this on the internet...
About what?
Recently, kidnappers have been abducting two people at a time. After killing one of them, they send evidence to the family of the one who's still alive ‒ usually an ear, a thumb, whatever – threatening to kill him, too. This scares the crap out of the parents. They'll pay the ransom without even blinking an eye. Oh, no, it can't be happening...
Bullshit!
Didn't you hear what he said? One of us is going to die! He drugged us... accounting issues... Oh my God, everything fits!
It's impossible. My parents are not that rich...
Aleister declared with conviction. He took a look around all over the room, twisting his neck and peeking behind his shoulders.
They were sitting on a small circular hatch, which was embossed on the floor. Stuart tried to step aside with a sudden stroke of his pelvis, but the chair did not move an inch. The tiles on the walls were white and aseptic, nearly six feet high. In the far corner opposite the door, there was a long steel sink. The whole room was dotted with exhaust vents and drainage culverts.
It looks like a slaughterhouse.
Or a sort of refrigerated room.
Are you sure?
Aleister asked Stuart, starting to embrace the scenario the boy had suggested.
I don't know. I hope I will be wrong so bad... Maybe it's really a joke.
Or, worse than that, we have ended up in some snuff movie...
I can't see any cameras, though...
Stuart objected.
They kept silent again for several seconds. The only thing that could be heard was the muffled splash of drops falling from the faucet into the sink.
What's your name?
Stuart. Yours?
Aleister. Aleister Huskin.
Their heart beating, pounding in their very ears, would cover any other possible noise.
I'm scared. I don't want to die!
– Stuart couldn't help but burst into tears – How can you find a compelling reason not to get killed? In half an hour?!
"Do not ask me..."
The fluorescent light above their heads began buzzing, and a second later, a LED seemed to burn out, just to blink on again, intermittently.
What are you thinking about?
How the hell he got to kidnap me...
Aleister replied, frowning. I remember being at the Omega Tau initiation party, in the fraternity hall. I had just passed their entry test, by gulping beer right from the hose without catching my breath. I was driving back home. I turned on the radio, raised the volume and then... there is a blank spot in my memories. He must have taken me by surprise, the bastard. Most likely, he was lying in the back seats of my car...
You're right! I haven't figured it out myself. The last thing I remember is that I was at Lake George with my family, taking a swim. My mom was sunbathing and my dad was fishing. After that, nothing... I'm sure I was wearing a swimsuit. Why are we wearing this white tank top, instead?
How can I know? It's cold in here, by the way... Eh uh, can you hear us?
– Aleister asked the void, looking somewhere upwards – "Get us some clothes,
