    Introduction

For over twenty-five years, I’ve been in Sarlat guiding visitors astonished by the quality of the architecture and layout of this small town nestled in a deep green valley, in the heart of the Dordogne.

I 'm not tired of it.

Discovering other wonderful cities we may think that the Sarladais (inhabitants of Sarlat) exaggerate boasting about their small town which does not have the time-honoured historical roots, the great cathedrals, the breathtaking panoramas, the sumptuous mansions that make the character of Venice, for example (to compare the incomparable). And yet...

And yet, whenever I return to Sarlat, I am seized by the indefinable charm that permeates its ochre limestone walls, its architectural coherence, its narrow streets picturesque in their simplicity... and despite the tourist shops and the restaurants of which there are probably too many, by the soul of a brave little city that went through so much misery to delight the curious visitors of today.

To give you a taste if you are preparing your trip or to keep as a souvenir if you have left us already, follow me through the maze of medieval streets of Sarlat the Beautiful. Let’s meet in front of the Tourist Office.

What luck to be able to visit Sarlat!

In the years following World War II, the city was so old and dilapidated that some spoke of razing it to the ground to build it up anew. This stupid idea was never taken seriously, but showed that it was time to act!

André Malraux, French Minister of Culture, saved Sarlat.
