    Chapter One: Introduction

Feathers by Jacqueline Woodson was first published in 2007. It is a children’s historical novel. The story is set in the 1970s.

The plot revolves around a sixth grade girl named Frannie who grows up during that time. There is only one white boy in the class. The arrival of that new white boy causes a lot of chaos in the class.

The book investigates the themes such as hope, religion, race, and understanding. The book describes what it was like to grow up in a society where segregation had recently been outlawed.

After the end of the segregation, all people were equal and there was hope everywhere.

Feathers won the Newbery Honor in the year 2008. The author also investigates family dynamics, and the pains felt during the period between childhood and adolescence.

The book has been written in a very simple language and it is very easy to understand. Eventually, the protagonist of the novel, Frannie, leans a big lesson about acceptance.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

The story is set in the 1970s, in an all African American school. It is situated in an urban area. The book deals with the topics such as hope, faith, racism, and disabilities.

As the story begins, a white boy joins that school. The other students soon dub him as ‘Jesus Boy.’ Since he is the only white boy at school, tension and misunderstanding take place in that school. The boy is very quiet.

Trevor is the class bully, but the white boy does not let Trevor hurt him. He does not lose his calm and talks to Trevor. He never tries to retaliate when Trevor troubles him.

Jesus Boy knows how to communicate through sign language. Since Frannie has known sign language
