About this ebook
Ariella has murdered her husband in the most heinous way possible. Brian Lawrence was a God fearing man and people have nothing but good things to say about him. So why on earth did Ariella kill him? And why in such a brutal way?
It’s Lillian’s job to figure out if Ariella is criminally insane or just a psychopath. But how can she be the latter if she’s never done this before? As the story unfolds, questions are answered. And soon things come to light.
Excerpt
‘He’d make me pray to him. Make me beg his forgiveness. He said he was god. That he was my saviour and without him I was nothing! Nothing!’
It was the first time she’d seen Ariella upset. That showed that she was feeling something about all this.
‘He would whip me, my back and my body. All the hidden parts, the parts my clothes covered. Once he was done, he’d force me to... So…’ She gazed at the bookcase again.
‘So what?’
‘So since he wanted to be the saviour, it was fitting that he died like one!’

Chapter One
Doctor Poole paced. She was a little nervous. This had never happened before. It had with other psychiatrists, but not with her. She wasn’t in that league yet. The case had landed on her desk. She had to study it and by the end of three months, she had to appear before a judge and tell them whether this woman was criminally insane or a psychopath.
Lillian Poole was a good citizen. She followed the rules. She was married to a kind and gentle man and they had two daughters. She was small in body, with short brown hair and a soft smile. If she needed to be, she was hard and strong, but only when it was needed. Lillian had always been fascinated by how the mind worked. It became a fascination when her brother –who had long passed away – killed their hamster by hitting it with a hammer and not showing a single sign of remorse. At first there were the excuses. He was naughty, he wanted attention, he was just being a boy, but as the things got worse, it was soon realised that he was a troubled boy.
Their parents were a normal couple. Lillian and her brother hadn’t been abused in any manner or form. So why had her brother turned out the way he had? At the age of fifteen he was finally taken away. And two years later he’d taken his life, by hanging himself with a bed sheet.
It was then that she decided to become a psychiatrist. But through all her study, she still didn’t have all the answers. The mind was still a complete mystery to her. Perhaps this next patient would make sense of it all.
There was a knock on the door.
‘Your patient is here,’ said her secretary.
Lillian’s heart thudded. This was it. It was time to meet the woman who had done it all. She nodded for Grace to let them in. Lillian took a few deep breaths to calm herself. She picked up the folder of the woman she’d soon meet and waited.
In walked a woman with two guards. She was dressed in an orange overall, her hands and legs cuffed.
‘Is all this necessary?’ She pointed at the restraints.
‘Yes. And we’ll be right outside this door.’ They sat Ariella down on the chair opposite the one Lillian would use.
‘Hi, I’m doctor Poole. I’ll be deciding whether or not you should be tried as a psychopath or insane.’
Ariella said nothing. Lillian studied her a moment. She was a nervous wreck. Perhaps that was because of what the file had revealed.
‘Okay. Let’s begin.’ She sat down and smiled.
The smile was not returned. Instead Ariella took a look around the room. It was filled with bookshelves and paintings. It was a plain office that did its job.
‘I know this is hard for you.’ Lillian wondered how such a pretty woman could’ve committed such a heinous crime.
Ariella was pretty, of mixed race. She had beautiful black curly hair. Her mother was black, and her father, whom she’d never met was white. Her father had left to go to war and never came back, that was the story her mother told her. But as she got older she knew this wasn’t true. The truth was, Ariella’s mother had got pregnant unexpectedly, and the father had wanted nothing to do with it.
Ariella had been brought up on the word of God. She’d been taught to do good, and that the reward she’d receive would be great. And as the good child she was good. Ariella did good works. She’d attended church with her mother every Sunday. She’d been one of the early ones to get things ready. She’d bring flowers to brighten up the pulpit. Ariella was a good girl and she grew up to be one.
But if that had been the case, why was she now face to face with a psychiatrist? Why did this woman have to make a decision whether or not she was insane or a psychopath?
‘Are we going to at least talk today?’ asked the doctor.
Ariella shrugged.
‘I’m trying to help you.’
‘Help me how?’ she said finally. There was no emotion in her voice.
‘If you’re declared insane, you won’t do jail time, you’ll be sent to a psychiatric hospital.
‘I don’t really care.’
‘You don’t mean that.’
‘I do.’ She looked around again.
‘Why did you do it?’ She had to ask.
‘Do what?’
‘You know what. Murder your husband the way you did. And why did you put all those people through all that trauma?’
‘I don’t know what you mean.’
Lillian studied her. Ariella’s reaction had brought back memories of her brother. He too didn’t care or given any reaction after he’d done something wrong. It was like staring right at him.
‘Yes you do. You did something extremely horrible and yet you don’t seem to realise that you’ve done it.’
‘Did what?’
Lillian realised that she had her work cut out for her. This was going to be a long three months.
‘Have you ever been in love?’ She tried a different tactic.
Ariella’s thoughts moved to Andre, the only man she truly loved. The only man she was capable of loving.
‘Have you?’
‘Yes.’
‘Your husband?’
‘I don’t have a husband.’
‘Of course. He’s dead. You killed him.’
She shut down again. Lillian wasn’t making this a great session.
‘What was it like for you growing up?’
‘Fine.’
‘Tell me about it. What were your favourite moments and times?’
Ariella shrugged.
‘Come on. You must’ve enjoyed your childhood.’
‘I did,’ she said suddenly. Her mind went back to when times were good. When her mother was her everything...
Marlene had done her best to look after her daughter in the best way. The man she’d loved had abandoned them. He wasn’t ready to be a father and so felt it right to just leave. Marlene took it upon herself to raise her daughter with love the best she knew how.
