Chapter 7: Summary
I was successfully offered a role at Allianz Insurance UK, as a one year retail portfolio analyst. Being my first ever real job in the corporate world, I did not really know what to expect. Looking online for books, articles or posts relating to what to expect in a new job was not really helpful, as most resources were either irrelevant or did not go into substantial detail.
Hence my motivation for writing this book, as I want to provide insight to some of the things you might experience when you start a new role. This book contains some of my personal experiences during my placement year and I hope you will find the knowledge shared, useful in helping you get the best out of your new job.
This book focuses on common themes/ challenges experienced by new starters in the workplace and offers helpful tips to overcome these obstacles.
Chapter One: My Big First Day
Before your first day at your new role, it will be a great idea to re-familiarise yourself with some of the materials used during the application process. It would probably have been weeks since your assessment centre/interview, hence doing this will increase your confidence on your first day. Things you might want to look up are: the job specification, required qualifications and documents needed, office location, office hours, office dress code and most obvious, the date you are meant to resume work.
By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.
Benjamin Franklin.
Despite all your preparations, you are still likely to be feeling nervous before your first day. It is normal so do not worry too much about it. Reflecting back on my first day made me realise that I was nervous for things that I could not control. One of the things that got nerves spiralling down my spine was: not knowing what to expect. This thought posed questions like will they like me? What happens when someone asks me a question that I cannot answer?
