Two Idiots From Earth
Synopsis: A government official on a planet currently at war with earth, finds two supposed spies at a bar and suspects they are Terran agents. They are pretty ‘dense’ and after grilling them for a period of time, he follows up on a couple of tips they give him and their supposedly real reason for being on the planet. However, things change suddenly for the official and his planet as the situation heats up.
Both of the spies were captured one week after they’d made planet fall on Zinn. The counterintelligence team never had an issue locating them as both men gave themselves away the moment they stepped into the nearest tavern. Their speech patterns were unlike anything in the city where they were captured, so it was easy for the tavern keeper to phone the nearest CI office and let them know two very suspicious men were in his bar.
I swear to the gods, they are from Earth,
he told the CI office over the line. They sound just like those guys on the old movies they still play on the screens. You need to get over here and pick them up. I’ll hold them as long as I can.
The secretary who took the call almost put it down as another crank until it hit him the tavern keeper answered all the right questions when he asked. Basic humanoid form? Check. Round ears? Check. Skin colors an unhealthy pink or brown? Check. Do they not seem to know the local news or names of our brave leaders? Check. Too familiar with entertainment from Earth? And, most important, unfamiliarity with the greater and lesser heroes of the Zinn Revolution? Check! This was one worth a look. He took the name and location of the tavern and sent the paper down the line to the dispatch officer. In another hour, the dispatcher would send out a Zinn investigator to find out if these two were human or not. It was very hard to tell the difference and the terrestrial espionage agencies were very clever when it came to makeup and languages.
The Zinn investigator walked into the tavern and took of his long black coat, folding it on one arm. He looked around the tavern, empty this time of day with few customers, and saw the tavern keeper polishing crystal on the counter. This tavern wasn’t very upscale and didn’t have too many customers in it. He looked out at the end of the bar and saw the two men which caused the tavern keeper’s suspicions. Well, time to find out what this was all about. The security directorate kept itself busy all day with these little incidents. Every now and then, one turned out to be useful.
