As his fingers moved up and down the neck of his guitar, I found myself sighing. The video was on mute, but I’d heard the song so many times that it didn’t matter. The music was all in my head while Bennett Emerson and his band, Midnight Cats performed in silence on stage.

Mary, hey, a voice interrupted my fantasy and brought me back to reality. As much was I wanted to be at a concert like the one I was watching on YouTube, it wasn’t meant to be. Midnight Cats wouldn’t be touring for another year at least and the last anyone heard, they were holed up in some castle in Eastern Europe while they worked on their new album.

The idea of recording in a castle was so Bennett. He always dressed in black, and he wore these amazing red contacts that looked so real that some people actually thought they were his real eyes. Even with a pair of fake fangs in his mouth, he sung like no one I’d ever heard before and his music really spoke to me.

Hey, I said back as I clicked the video to pause and opened a new tab to cover up what I was doing. I neglected to remind Rob, my boss, that I didn’t like being called Mary, that I preferred my full name — Marigold, but I never really spoke up about it.
