    Introduction

Manipulation is a concept that falls under Social Psychology. It is situated under the ranks of the different types of social influences that people resort to in order to effect change in the perceptions and actions of other people. While social influence is not necessarily something negative, some constructs that make it up can be negative. Unfortunately, even as it indicates a degree of intelligence for a person arriving at a scheme of manipulative plans, manipulation is something negative.

What makes manipulation negative can be seen in the means used to fulfill an end. Commonly, the means employed share a similar characteristic with the end. For example, a con man can resort to coercion in order to make his victim surrender his belongings.

What prompts manipulators to engage in such behaviors then?

First, just like any other individual, manipulators have the need to advance their purposes, and the only method they see to do so is to manipulate others.

Second, some individuals manipulate others in order to secure power and authority. They do so at the expense of others’ ignorance or vulnerability.

Third, there are individuals who derive their sense of superiority from manipulating others.
