About this ebook
When I first came across the book “The Promise”, I was thrilled by the title and the authors! The book contains practical principles on transformation. Let me get this across clear enough: it is not an everyday book on personal development, ethics and values or morality - it is a gift of transformation that will definitely breathe a force of moral change in the conscience of individuals and our society at large. It holds spirit and something that fires mere words to instigate change from within. I am solely recommending it for a society where mere words and empty promises have vexed the citizens and have not done much to encourage both individual and societal change.

FOREWORD
When I first came across the book The Promise
, I was thrilled by the title and the authors!
To the casual reader, this book will be impressive because of its straightforward but engaging style of delivery and to individuals with a desire to see a holistically transformed Nigeria; they will be motivated by the dedication of the book to societal change. The action steps listed in every chapter makes it particularly engaging; it creates a work plan that allows each reader commit practically to Nation building. It is thoroughly in keeping with the national policy as stated in subsections of the Nigerian Constitution on social objectives and National ethics;
* The State shall abolish all corrupt practices and abuse of power. (Chapter 2:15:5)
* The National ethics shall be Discipline, Integrity, Dignity of Labour, Social, Justice, Religious * Tolerance, Self-reliance and Patriotism. (Chapter 2:23)
It shall be the duty of every citizen to:
-Abide by this Constitution, respect its ideals and its institutions, the National Flag, the National Anthem, the National Pledge, and legitimate authorities;
-Help to enhance the power, prestige and good name of Nigeria, defend Nigeria and render such national service as may be required;
-Make positive and useful contribution to the advancement, progress and well-being of the community where he resides. (Chapter 2:24)
THE PROMISE is an amazing work that serves as a reminder of what our past leaders believed in and fought for – to defend our Nation’s unity, and uphold her honor and glory.
I wholly recommend this literary effort to every Nigerian.

MY MIND INTERPRETS
By Daniel and Wendy Okoli
This book is based on a simple yet profound insight from the fact that the national pledge is really a special promise. Although we have been aware almost forever that a pledge is a solemn promise, just like you probably are, but never have we really applied it in the context of the National Pledge.
The first thing we did was to change the word ‘pledge’ to ‘promise’ in our personal recital of the Pledge. It helped give some valuable understanding into a host of key issues.
In our understanding, we saw just how much of the existence of Nigeria as a nation depends on a relatively simple set of six lines; we began to see the reason for so much political unrest, corruption, economic distress, violence and conflict within the nation and why leaders often seem so powerless in intervening effectively in the nation’s plight.
You see, understanding the problem is a step to solving it; knowing where to tap is often more important than the tap itself, if you know what this means. There comes a point when one stops reacting automatically to every wind of danger and threat and actually sits back deliberately to understand just where it’s all coming
