About this ebook
William Landon Gorilla Jones was a middleweight champion in 1932, winning an elimination tournament in Milwaukee a year after Mickey Walker gave the title up. Jones beat Italian boxer Oddone Piazza for the title. Jones conceded the title a year later in France following a unification bout that he lost. Then Gorilla won the title back once more and later retired in 1940. After his ring career Jones worked as a chauffeur/bodyguard for entertainer Mae West. She helped him buy property in Los Angeles and also took care of his parents by giving them jobs. Gorilla was named for his lean body and exceptionally long reach.

Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, Jones was officially recognized as the National Boxing Association Middleweight Champion of the World on January 26, 1932. Gorilla defeated Oddone Piazza of Milan, Italy for the title in a 10-round fight held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A disappointing crowd of 3,500 paid less than $5,500 to watch the bout live.
The fight was part of an elimination tournament held by the N.B.A. to determine a successor to champion Mickey Walker. Walker gave up the title in 1931 when he could no longer make the 160 pound weight limit.
Jones outclassed Oddone, outfought and outboxed him also. The Tennesseean won every round except the first. Gorilla began an aggressive assault that had a wobbly and reeling Piazza on the ropes and defenseless. A paid attendance of $189,000 watched Mickey Walker's last title defense in Los Angeles in 1929. Walker was a spectator at the Jones-Piazza fight.
In August 1930 actress Nina Mae McKinney denied a Baltimore Afro American story that
