    CHAPTER ONE

That magical summer, Daisy met the giant black badger, she just couldn't believe her eyes. And when it spoke to her, Daisy just knew she was going to have a fantastic adventure.

    ****

That strange summer Daisy's parents had rented a small cottage near Tullan Strand in Ballyliffin, County Donegal. The tiny white-washed cottage, had three windows, two in front almost beside the half-doors, and one in the back that looked out into a small garden. The cottage sat a few meters up a pebbled lane-way, just off a narrow road that led down to the beach. About halfway along the wide beach grew high sand-hills, built up by years of waves pounding on the beach.

    ****

The first day, as her parents unpacked their suitcases, Daisy and Gizmo, her brown and white terrier, went exploring. Daisy was a tall girl for ten. She had blonde hair and a cluster of freckles that grew above her stubby nose.

As she walked along the beach in her bare feet, Daisy giggled when she saw Gizmo chase after the waves. Barking loudly, he would snap at the water and then scamper back again as the rolling water rushed towards him.

Soon they had reached the sand-hills. Gizmo snapped at the sand falling from Daisy's heels as she walked to the bottom of the highest hill and looked up. The warm wind whipped at the bottom of her light- yellow dress. It looked a steep climb to the top, but she quickly made up her mind. Come on Gizmo! she shouted excitedly. Let's climb to the top.

They were halfway up the sand-hill, Daisy was breathing heavily with Gizmo panting beside her, before she stopped to rest. She swung around and sat down on the soft sand. Shading her eyes, she looked out to the blue, green sea. Far out she could see seagulls squealing loudly diving to the water. Further on out she could see a tiny island.

Suddenly Gizmo barked, as if to say, 'Come on, let's climb on up.' Another two minutes later, red-faced, and gasping for breath, Daisy reached the top. She was just followed by Gizmo, whose tongue was hanging out. His long tongue was covered in sand and saliva. Now from the top of the sand-hill Daisy could see down into the fields behind her. Small mounds of sand were dotted all over the fields. A flat grassy clearing surrounded by the sandy mounds lay to her right. From where she stood, Daisy could see several brown and white rabbits nibbling on the rough grass.

Come on Gizmo, she said. Let's go down there.

They reached the clearing shortly and when they arrived, Daisy looked around.

Some of the mounds were at least fifteen meters high. The clearing was about the size
