EXCERPT
“YOU, you are unpredictable – which make you fun,” she explained, “but I don’t think I’m ready for unpredictable just yet. But don’t change ok, that’s what makes you awesome.”
“No way! You don’t use my line to shoot me down! Unpredictable?”
“Yes,” she replied. Deep inside her she got the feeling that she was going to regret this, “Friends?”
“You mean like someone to hang around with, go crazy with, and do silly stuff with?”
“Yeah,” she said, nodding appreciatively, “something like that.”
“I don’t know if I can do that,” Eric said, trying to appear pensive. “But if you let me kiss you, I might agree to it.”
“You’re not going to let this go are you?”
“Not a chance, I only wear this suit for something big, you know.”
“OK. I’ll let you kiss me.”
“In there?” he asked, pointing at her lips.
“In here,” she repeated.
“Then friends?”
“Friends, yes.”
“Well, alright then, let’s get on with it,” he announced, cracking his knuckles and testing his breath. “Alright, come here...”

Chapter One
THE CONVERSATION STARTED as guarded as it could be, at least for Laila, but eventually it put on a more colorful tone.
The pancakes lasted for an hour, so did Laila's muffins. Between a refill of coffee and another serving of hot chocolate, Eric and Laila talked like they knew each other.
Eric also did the kind of observing that Laila had done earlier. The first thing he noticed was Laila's eyes. When she dropped her guard down and just began talking with him, her eyes took on a sparkle of almost dreamy quality. Her eyes looked even dreamier each time she squinted, usually when she was trying to accuse him of something or when she was trying to recall a detail.
Then there were her cheekbones. Though they were not too high, it lent the impression of deep-seatedness to large dreamy eyes. The angle of her thin nose that perfectly accented the gap between its tip and the top of her lips made her look like a sculpture. Eric noted that if she were a sculpture come to life, surely she was Pygmalion.
When she smiled, her perfect rows of teeth, though not gleaming white, made her lips look even fuller. And then there was the way she would comb her hair with her hands that made the fullness of her crowning glory fall in volumes on the side of her head. Even at this early an hour, her hair majestically held themselves well, ending at both sides of her face, framing the soft curves of her cheeks and accenting the strong chin.
She was more beautiful than any other woman he'd been with, he knew that. He also knew that she was probably not going to entertain any advances from him. The way she talked reeked of detest to anything that sounded remotely close to a relationship. Although it was not apparent, Eric did not discount the possibility that this lovely creature in front of him might just be a lesbian.
By the time they got out of the door and was on their way towards her apartment, their conversation was almost bordering on the silly. Consisting mostly of the university's professors and their eccentricities, it was as light as any conversation goes. There were a few stops along the way, usually to pose silly poses on cars, fences, and signs.
I believe this is your stop,
Eric started as they reached the gates of Laila's apartment.
Yes, this is my stop. The night didn't turn out as I expected it to turn out,
Laila admitted.
What do you mean by that?
Well, I thought you were going to blackmail me.
Good lord! Really? Ouch!
You turned out alright.
As did you.
Don't think you can sweet talk me though,
Laila said, You still haven't deleted that video.
Well, that might be a little difficult.
Don't give me that, don't ruin it.
So you are saying that you enjoyed our little snack together?
Yes. Now, delete it.
Wait, wait. So, with or without the video, we might still be able to go out?
Like on a date? No.
So how 'bout on a not-date?
Yes. Now please, delete it before I go up.
Like I said, it might be difficult.
Now, you're just being a jerk.
I'm serious, it's hard to delete it.
What do you mean? It's just a few taps on your phone.
Yes, it just takes a few taps. The thing is, I don't have my phone with me.
What? So you-
There was no night vision video to start with.
Arrrrgh!
Laila said in mock anger, punching him on the chest, It was blackmail all along!
He was grinning. No, it was fun. I think, I've made your night worth it that I deserve to come in.
Ha! No. Sorry.
Not even a kiss? Bummer.
Eric exclaimed, kicking dust.
That's cute, but no.
There was a reluctance that dragged on her voice that at least calmed his ego, even if the no
was a definite no
.
Crap. Can't complain, I guess. So about our next, uhm, meeting.
This early?
Wouldn't wanna waste my window,
Eric explained.
Call me,
Laila said as she grabbed an eyeliner from her purse.
How do I know this is not a phony number?
Eric asked as he watched her scribble her number on the back of his left hand.
You don't,
she answered. She gave him a peck on his cheek and walked towards the main door to the apartment. See you Eric.
It's Eric!
he called after her and saw her wave his last comment away.
Eric stood on the sidewalk watching her until at last she disappeared behind the doors.
LAILA UNDRESSED immediately upon getting to her room. Ashley had not yet come back. She tried
