Furry Fable 01: Questioner Kitty and Troy the Tree
Once upon a time, there was a lively, playful little kitty named Questioner. He was a good kitty, but he had not been properly trained for how to carry on a pleasant conversation with others. As a result, he was always asking everybody everything all the time to try to understand a little more clearly this big and fascinating world he had been born into.
A nuisance!
they said of him. A non-stop, questioning nuisance!
It was a bright, sunny morning and Questioner woke up earlier than normal because one of the first rays of sunlight had come into his room and focused its penetrating glow on the young kitty’s face. Upon innocently opening his eyes while still half-asleep, he jumped out of his kitty bed and stumbled to a halt a few meters away.
What was that?
he thought, as he began to lick his front paws and carefully clean his face, hoping perhaps to wipe off the rays of light that had unexpectedly entered his home. It seemed to be working since the burning sensation that he had felt in his eyes was now going away and his vision was becoming normal again.
Calm and relaxed now, Questioner wandered outside through one of the open windows of his house and headed down the street, as he liked to do very early every day. The mornings were always wonderful moments— a time of great energy, exploration, and adventure, and getting to know other cats and many curious things along the way.
Actually, it was the mystery itself that was exciting since there were many surprises to be found in his territory. As a result, those daily journeys formed a big part of Questioner’s education. That was how he learned about other things and other creatures.
With wide-open eyes, alert ears, a sensitive nose, and untiring paws, he could go exploring with a confident determination. There were no requirements for being a student of the school of life except having the curiosity and humility necessary to be able to learn from what he discovered on his daily path.
Unlike many others of his own species though, Questioner’s behavior was very unpredictable. The only thing truly predictable about this curious little kitty was that he would always be unpredictable! And that characteristic is exactly what made the other felines and creatures around him quite nervous and uncomfortable most of the time.
Questioner Kitty was bouncing around happily from one part of the street to another early that morning when suddenly he saw this huge shadow in front of him. He slid to a halt in the soft grass growing by one of the sidewalks, sending pieces of the little green stalks beneath his paws flying around his body. He hesitated to look up for fear of what that huge shadow might be, so he hissed furiously at the ground below, hoping that his brave reaction might cause it to disappear from his view.
What could you possibly be hissing at, you silly little creature?
came a booming voice from up above.
Still looking down at the ground, Questioner shyly replied, "Well, I am, uh, of course, hissing at this grass in front of me. Yes, this grass has upset me because of the way in which it has gone flying up around my body."
That’s the silliest story I think I’ve ever heard in my life, you strange little creature! Of what species are you?
I am of the species… Gulp!
Questioner stopped speechless at that moment as he slowly looked up in front of him.
I’m talking to a tree. A tree! I think, I mean, well, there is no one else around!
No, it can’t be! But, who else could I be talking to?
"Oh, stop with your crazy chattering, would you! Of course you’re talking to a tree, and a tree is talking to you! And you and the tree are having a very strange conversation, with all of your confusing comments. Now, I asked you a question, didn’t I?"
Yes, well, uh, yes, Mr. Tree.
"I am Troy. Troy the Tree. Why don’t you introduce yourself in a proper manner now?"
"Very well, Mr. Troy. I am Cat, of the species Questioner. I mean, no, that’s not it! I am Questioner, of the species cat. Yes, that time I said it right. I mean... hey, trees can’t talk!"
"What is wrong with you anyway,
