      Chapter 1

      It was a Texas spring. Meaning hot and very early.

      So Jaqueline Oster did what normal, attractive college-aged girls did who kept themselves up:. She wore the tightest dress, showing the most leg she could. She only had to look at her mom and then her grandma to know she wouldn't look like she did forever. And then the men would be looking at the younger women.

      She knew her dad did. When she'd bring friends home from her sorority, she saw the look in his eyes. Mom didn't have that animal, sexual hold on him anymore.

      Mom knew it too. That's why she got her boobs done two years earlier. Then got the tummy tuck and the permanent eye liner procedure a few months later.

      Being hot didn't last forever. Sure Jacqueline wanted to be more than that. But it took effort. Her C minus on her freshman Microeconomics mid-term was evidence she had a ways to go.

      College was fun. Boys were always at the ready to get with her. But it was also scary. She didn't know what she wanted to do in the future. And at the same time, she didn't want to be her mom.

      Aging by the minute and nervously waiting for her husband to hook up with the younger secretary or an intern.

      Jacqueline wasn't any great scholar. But she was street smart. She knew what mattered and what didn't in the real world.
