1-9! O-6! Every few minutes a fraternity call or sorority chant would rise above the noise of the masses. It was the middle of October, and North Carolina Union was filled with green, red, gold, and orange. The Greeks were on the yard.

It was North Carolina Union’s homecoming, and Sahara and Noah drove into Greensboro early that morning for the celebration. Sahara wasn’t sure what to expect. The closest that she had come to a homecoming at a historically black college was watching Spike Lee’s School Daze. She had even missed out on going to Howard’s homecoming when she was in college.

As they walked on the yard, there were folks—current students, alumni, and faculty—everywhere. People were networking. Exes were catching up. Sorority sisters were strolling. Fraternity brothers were stepping. At North Carolina Union, like every HBCU, homecoming was not just about a football game, but a time for the students and alumni to reconnect with friends and create new tales of lore of which they could reminisce about in future years.

Sahara! Sahara!

Soror Donna and Soror Tania were standing at the pink and green Lambda Upsilon Alpha plot, with its LUA shield and frog-embellished benches, calling her.
