Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (1809-1852) was the son of a small property landlord in Ukraine and left for St. Petersburg at the age of 20 for a career in the civil service. Quickly disappointed by his ambitions, he abandoned bureaucracy in 1831 to devote himself solely to literature. He was introduced to Pushkin who encouraged him to write, and was first known for his short story collections: Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka (1831-1832) and Arabesques (1835). The theatrical success of The Government Inspector in 1836 was thought by him to be a misunderstanding, from which stemmed a long period of travels across Western Europe. From 1840 until his death,
