Chapter 1
An Early Surprise
It was still too dark to get out of bed. Even my big brother Cody wasn’t awake yet.
Ugh,
I whined into my pillow. I pushed down the covers and stared at the ceiling.
How could I, Max E. James, not sleep? Today is my birthday and we’re having a party! I’ve waited a whole year already and only have a few more hours to go. But hours feel like days when you’re as excited as I am.
I closed my eyes and tapped my fingers on the headboard. At least it was quiet so I could figure out how to make my birthday wish come true. Last year, it was apparently delivered to the wrong James address— a mistake I won‘t repeat.
Ring-Ring. Ring-Ring.
I bolted upright in bed. My heart pounded in my chest. Was that the phone or my imagination? Who could possibly be calling this early?
Ring-Ring. Ring-Ring.
This time I was sure I heard it. I sprang from my bed and burst into the hall. Monsters lurking in the hall weren’t as scary as a grumpy family on my birthday. I shut my eyes, held up my blanket, Fuzzy, and tore down the hall to the kitchen.
Ring-Ring. Ring-Ring.
I fumbled for the phone in the darkness.
Hello,
I whispered.
Max?
a soft voice said. It’s me, Jo-Jo.
Hello, Jo-Jo,
I said. Are you allowed out of your room this early?

he said. But I couldn’t sleep.
