Chapter One: Introduction
Homeless Bird
by Gloria Whelan was first published in 2000. Soon after its publication, the book became very popular. It was the winner of Books for the Teen Age Award
in 2001 and National Book Award
in 2000.
The story revolves around a thirteen-year-old girl named Koly. She grows up in India. It was a tradition that most of the girls at the age of thirteen got married in India at that time.
Koly being thirteen is getting married. It is an arranged marriage and the boy has been chosen by her parents, but she learns that the husband her parents have chosen for her is a sickly boy whose parents are wicked. She does not want to marry that boy. She wishes to flee from her home.
The tradition does not give girl child any choice. Eventually, she is married and her fate is locked forever. To add to her misfortune, her husband dies in the same year. Koly is now all alone without any rights.
She is a young widow who has to suffer a life of hunger, loneliness, and servitude. She has to bear the atrocities of her cruel mother-in-law.
She finally surrenders to her fate and begins to accept the hardships of her life. Her life unexpectedly takes another devastating turn. She is sent to a city of unwanted widows. In that city, those widows have to beg for food on the streets, wandering whole day.
Koly is literally starving when she suddenly finds strength and courage. She is an independent woman and she has the ancient traditions of her village life with her. She blends these two things together and begins to learn to live for herself.
She meets a rickshaw driver named Raji who takes her to a widows’ home. She gets food and shelter there and begins to earn a little money by stringing garlands at the bazaar.
She begins to do embroidery. In that beautiful tapestry, she continues to weave her life one stitch at a time, giving new meaning and colours to her otherwise monotonous and dull life.
Chapter Two: Plot Overview
Koly is the protagonist of the novel. At the beginning of the novel, she is thirteen. She is about to get married, as the tradition demands the girls of thirteen years of age ought to be married.
Her mother informs her that she is going to be married. She tells Koly that her father is looking for a husband for Koly. She is not surprised because almost every girl has to agree to an arranged marriage in India. However, she begins to feel a little nervous.
She begins to wonder how she will be able to live with a person who she has never met before. One day, her father informs the family that he has found a husband for Koly. The name of the boy is Hari. Koly
