If you believe someone you care about is gambling compulsively, this pamphlet may help. Although you can see what the gambling is doing to the afflicted, it may be more difficult to see what this disease is doing to you. Only through identifying and learning about how compulsive gambling affects you can you break through denial and get the support you need.
About the author
Mary Heineman is a clinician on staff at South Oaks Hospital (Amityville, NY) in the South Oaks Gambling Treatment Program (516-264-4000). She has devoted many years to treating compulsive gamblers and their families. She holds a master’s in psychology and a master’s in social work. Heineman is a certified social worker and a nationally certified compulsive gambling counselor. In addition to a number of published articles on this topic, she is also the author of Losing Your Shirt.
