About the Book and Author
Introduction To Still Alice
Still Alice by Lisa Genova is a novel about a relatively young woman’s heartbreaking descent into early onset Alzheimer’s disease. The brilliant and put-together Alice Howland is a psychology professor at Harvard. She’s also a writer, a wife, and a mother of three grown children. Shortly before her fiftieth birthday, however, she begins to experience perplexing memory problems. Eventually, she realizes that something is wrong. After some testing, she is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. The diagnosis turns Alice’s life, and the lives of her family members, upside down. Her children are terrified, her husband is at a loss, and Alice herself becomes more and more vulnerable as her disease progresses.
About Lisa Genova
Ms. Genova is a first-time author with a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Harvard University. During her career, she’s conducted research on memory loss following stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, drug addiction, and the molecular etiology of depression. She was inspired to write Still Alice, in part, because her own grandmother suffered from Alzheimer’s. Ms. Genova watched her grandmother deteriorate, which had a profound affect on the young woman. She was heartbroken, but also came to be fascinated by the disease from both an academic perspective and the perspective of someone experiencing the disease firsthand.
