introduction
I didn’t see my grandmother often when I was growing up, as she lived almost a thousand miles away. Consequently, when she came to visit, she often stayed for a few weeks. She was a stern, forbidding woman, but I remember a number of tender moments. One of these was her sitting on my bed when I was about five or six, teaching me children’s prayers and traditional rhymes. The one I remember best is this familiar prayer:
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,
Bless the bed that I lie on.
Four angels to my bed,
Four angels round my head.
One to watch, and one to pray,
And two to bear my soul away.
Fortunately, I didn’t learn what the final line meant until many years later. This must have been the first time I heard about angels.
I attended a church school, and the only thing I learned about angels there was that they were God’s helpers
who conveyed messages to and from God. Catholic friends who lived nearby occasionally mentioned their guardian angels. When I asked the chaplain at my school a question about them, he told me that children who went to the Catholic school down the road had guardian angels, but we didn’t need them. I was in my twenties when I discovered that I not only had a guardian angel but also needed him. It took me many years to learn that there was much more to angels than that.
Other people discover angels when they see one for the first time or sense an angelic presence. A friend of mine lived in Japan for several years. One night he woke up and saw a small winged angel wearing a kimono. He wasn’t religious and was surprised to see an angel.
My next-door neighbor has seen angels on several different occasions. She sees them as glowing, golden balls of light. She finds it comforting to see them, as they always appear at times when she needs help or has an important decision to make.
Many people experience the presence of an angel but don’t realize it until later. A good example is an elderly woman who was traveling to see her grandchildren who lived a hundred miles away. It was winter, and she was finding it difficult to drive along snow-covered country roads. She found a place to park her car off the road and decided to wait until conditions improved before continuing on to her destination. She locked all the doors, lay down on the back seat, and tried to get to sleep. After about thirty minutes, she heard a gentle, but persistent, tapping on the windshield. She told me she was curious, and, unusual for her, unafraid. She opened the window slightly and called out to whoever or whatever it was.
A young man, dressed immaculately in a business suit, came up to the window and said hello to her. He said that he lived in a nearby farm house and had seen her park her car. As it was snowing and the temperature was dropping, he’d come to see if he could offer any help.
You can stay at our farm overnight if you wish,
he said. Or I could drive your car to your grandchildren’s home.
The woman was so surprised that it wasn’t until much later that she thought how strange it was that someone who lived on a farm was wearing business clothes or that he knew she was driving to see her grandchildren.
I really want to get to my daughter’s home,
she said.
The man seemed so honest and sincere that she allowed him into the car, and he drove her the rest of the way. Halfway there, she asked him how he’d get back to his farm. The man smiled and said, Someone’s waiting to drive me back.
Again, these surprising words seemed perfectly normal to the tired and confused woman.
When they reached her destination, the young man carried her luggage up to the front door, handed her the car keys, and turned to walk away.
Thank you,
the woman said. Please tell me your name.
The man smiled, walked to the end of the driveway, and disappeared. As she knocked on her daughter’s front door, she felt that it must have been a hallucination and that she’d actually driven all the way herself. This thought was completely dispelled when her grandchildren opened the door and asked who the man was that they’d seen carrying her bags to the front door. This woman now believes in angels, as she’s totally convinced that the young man who helped her was, in fact, an angel.
Some people receive regular messages from angels. These usually appear as thoughts in their minds, although some people hear the messages as if someone was speaking to them. One woman I met told me that she’d been receiving, and acting upon, angelic messages for more than forty years.
On one occasion, she was traveling by bus and was getting ready to get off at the next stop. She received a thought telling her to stay on the bus. She was surprised but, as she trusted her guardian angel, stayed where she was. Two stops later, a man came on board and sat down beside her. He had a pleasant smile, and before long they were chatting to each other as if they’d been friends for years. When he reached his destination, he asked her if she’d like to have a cup of coffee with him. She agreed. As she got off the bus, she thought how out of character this was. However, she felt comfortable with the man, and they enjoyed a pleasant conversation as they sipped their coffees. When they finished, they exchanged phone numbers. The relationship blossomed, and just over two years later, they married. If this woman hadn’t listened to her guardian angel, the chances are that she would never have met her future husband.
A number of people have experienced being touched by an angel. A man I know was visiting his wife in the hospital. She was terminally ill with cancer and declining quickly. As he sat beside her bed trying to contain his tears, he felt a gentle touch on his cheek. The knowledge that he was surrounded by angels provided comfort and told him that he and his wife would meet again and continue their relationship in the afterlife.
A few people have told me that they’ve experienced angel wings wrapped around them at times when they’ve needed protection. Although they haven’t been able to see the angel, they’ve gained comfort and strength from the knowledge that they are being helped by angels when they really need it.
From the dawn of civilization, people have believed that dreams are a highly effective way for divine beings to send messages to people. When we’re dreaming, our minds are more receptive to the imagery and symbolism in the messages that come from the divine. Over the years, many people have told me about their experiences with angels in their dreams. This isn’t surprising, because when we’re asleep, we temporarily let go of our rational left brain and are able to access our subconscious minds and become aware of messages from the divine.
Many people receive signs of an angelic presence. Some people notice white feathers or experience a beautiful, delicate floral scent that tells them angels are present. Others hear angelic music, as if a magnificent choir was singing solely for them. Unexplained sparkles of light can be a sign of angels. Some people see angels in cloud formations, while others experience a strong feeling that they’re in the company of angels. It seems that angels can make their presence known in many different ways that are personal to each individual.
It makes no difference how you experience angels. The important part is to welcome them into your life, and to allow them to help you. This book will help you increase your knowledge of angels and hopefully enable you to experience them for yourself.
The first chapter discusses angels: what they are, what they look like, and what they do. The second chapter looks at the hierarchy of angels, which explains how the angels are divided up into different groups. In many ways it’s like a government department, with a number of different rankings. Chapter three discusses guardian angels. We all have a special angel who protects, helps, and guides us from the moment we’re born. This chapter will help you communicate with your guardian angel and strengthen the connection you have with him. Chapter four looks at the archangels, focusing mainly on the big four
of Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel. Chapter five looks at some of the specialist angels, such as the angels of healing and the angels of abundance. These particular angels are there to provide you with help in special situations. Chapter six covers how to communicate with angels. Chapter seven covers how to work with the angelic realms. A number of rituals are included to help you do this. Chapter eight covers angelic visitations throughout history and discusses a number of specific instances of angelic communication. appendix a looks at the role of angels in art, literature, and music. appendix b contains a list of problems and concerns and suggests specific angels who can help resolve them. All biblical quotations come from the King James Version of the Bible. References in the text will include the chapter and verse numbers.
I hope this book will encourage you to look further into the world of angels and to make them an integral part of your life.

What Are Angels?
Dictionaries define angels as spiritual beings who attend to God and act as divine messengers. Almost all of the major religions accept the idea of angels acting as go-betweens between God and humanity. In fact, the word angel comes from the Greek word angelos, which means messenger.
In the Bible angels are described as ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation
(Hebrews 1:14). Angels are servants of God who exist solely to carry out his will (Tobit 12:18). John of Damascus wrote this detailed account of what an angel is: an intelligent essence, in perpetual motion, with free will, incorporeal, ministering to God, having obtained by grace an immortal nature: and the Creator alone knows the form and limitation of its essence
(John of Damascus [1988] 2009).
Saint Thomas Aquinas believed that angels were comprised of pure thought or intellect. They could assume physical bodies whenever they wanted to, but even these were comprised of pure thought. Meister Eckhart, the German theologian and philosopher, wrote, That’s all an Angel is; an idea of God
(von Hochheim 1998).
Although many people have tried, no one has been able to give a conclusive answer to the question What are angels?
The general consensus seems to be that they are celestial beings of pure light who operate on a different vibrational frequency from us. This makes them invisible to human eyes. However, angels can change their vibrations whenever they wish. When they lower their vibrations to a human level, we can become aware of their presence and sometimes even see them. Angels protect and guide mankind and usually appear in extraordinary situations, such as when someone needs help, protection, or comfort. Although the traditional view of an angel is of a small cherub with wings, angels can change their shape and form whenever they wish. This means you might see an angel as a person, a butterfly or other winged figure, a rainbow, a bright light, or anything else. Angels are genderless and can appear in both male and female form. However, all the references to angels in the Bible appear to be masculine, rather than feminine. In the Jewish tradition, angels are considered masculine.
Angels can appear in any form they wish. In the Bible they always appear as male adults, but there are many reports of angels appearing as children,
