    Chapter One

Mason Ziegler sat bolt upright, eyes wild with terror. Shoving aside his disheveled hair, he stared unblinking into absolute blackness.

What the—? He gasped, as he scrambled clumsily to his feet. He tried to think of the last thing he did, but his thoughts were too slow and hazy.

    hoo-h’HOO-hoo-hoo!

Mason froze, his ears on high alert. It took him a good minute to connect the hooting with an owl; and now that he was listening intently, he could hear screeches, howls and other wild calls of nightly animals.

Oh… fuck me, he groaned a little too loudly, and just as he realized his mistake, a vicious growl reverberated through the darkness. But Mason wasn’t sticking around this time, he was off like a shot. When he finally felt like he put enough distance between himself and the snarling creature, he slowed to a brisk walk.

Suddenly, the air grew cold and a strong breeze sent shivers down his spine. He stuck his hands in his pockets to keep them warm and discovered his iPhone. Elated, he yanked it out and turned it on. His excitement faded once he realized there was no signal and the battery life only had ten percent left. Swearing under his breath, he quickly accessed the flashlight feature, and held the phone up. He swept it all around and saw that he was surrounded by towering, bare trees, and that the sky was obscured by thick, ominous clouds.

    CRACK! Off
