    The traffic along Seventh Avenue didn’t budge when the light changed. I pounded the edge of the steering wheel with my fists in frustration. I was three cars away from the intersection, so I couldn’t even escape up the next street.

    Damn it! Not today. Not now.

    It wasn’t the weather—the strip of Seattle sky up above the tall gray office buildings was clear. I hadn’t read about special visitors from outer space coming for a picnic. Not even the most paranoid of conspiracy blogs claimed any experimental equipment would be tested that week.

    I’d never seen any evidence of either aliens or black helicopters. Then again, there were many things I did see that no one else did.

    However, today, nothing except the usual evening after-work
