    God's Gift for Fathers - Jack Countryman

    Introduction

    Afather’s life is filled with many responsibilities: to provide for his family, to be the spiritual leader, and to give wisdom to his children. This book brings to light the fact that in God’s eyes the role of a father is an important part of His creation. God’s Word is a beacon of light that will guide your steps through the many challenges you will face. My father was the light that showed me how to live for Christ at an early age. May this book help you be the father God has called you to be.

    He Praises the Lord

    Psalm 150:6 says, Let everything that has breath praise the L ORD . As long as we have breath, we must acknowledge the power and majesty of our Lord. We are to praise Him when we get up in the morning, praise Him in the car, praise Him at work—wherever we are, we should seek to honor Him. First Thessalonians 5:18 says, In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. You may not understand what is happening in your life, but God’s will in every circumstance is that you praise Him and thank Him in all things. When you do this, God will give you a peace that passes all understanding.

    Praise the LORD!

    Praise God in His sanctuary;

    Praise Him in His mighty firmament!

    Praise Him for His mighty acts;

    Praise Him according to His excellent greatness! . . .

    Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.

    Praise the LORD!

    —PSALM 150:1–2, 6

    Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised;

    And His greatness is unsearchable.

    One generation shall praise Your works to another,

    And shall declare Your mighty acts.

    —PSALM 145:3–4

    Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

    —PHILIPPIANS 4:6–7

    His Children Grow to Love the Lord

    Afather’s ability for helping his children grow in the Lord is a reason to shout for joy because he is doing exactly what he has been called by God to do. The very essence of being a father to your children is helping them build a foundation for living a life filled with the Holy Spirit. As you lead your children closer to Him, God will protect and guide your children as they walk through life, and you will experience His peace, knowing that He is with them. Therefore, teach your children daily to honor God and live for Him; it is the only way to be happy in the Lord.

    Train up a child in the way he should go,

    And when he is old he will not depart from it.

    —PROVERBS 22:6

    Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

    —MATTHEW 22:37–39

    Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height—to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

    —EPHESIANS 3:17–19

    I love those who love me,

    And those who seek me diligently will find me.

    —PROVERBS 8:17

    He Worships the Lord

    The Bible speaks often of worship and invites you to come with a pure heart to worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. There are many reasons the Lord is worthy to be praised: His power, His majesty, His righteousness, and His love among them. And worship, the act of acknowledging God’s strength and benevolence, is part of your responsibility and privilege as a Christian. When you honor God with worship and come to Him with an open heart, you will be blessed and filled with His presence. When you begin each day with worship and prayer, you will be reminded to walk closely with Him. Diligently seek to honor Him throughout your day, and you will be blessed.

    Give to the LORD the glory due His name;

    Bring an offering, and come before Him.

    Oh, worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness!

    —1 CHRONICLES 16:29

    Oh come, let us sing to the LORD!

    Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.

    Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;

    Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.

    For the LORD is the great God,

    And the great King above all gods.

    —PSALM 95:1–3

    Oh come, let us worship and bow down;

    Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.

    For He is our God,

    And we are the people of His pasture,

    And the sheep of His hand.

    —PSALM 95:6–7

    Trials Run Rampant

    Sometimes in life you seem to meet trouble at every turn. God often uses trials to position you for greater blessings. Even in times of great disappointment, He has your best in mind. He knows how He wants to use disappointments and hardships for your benefit. During these trials, He desires that you see Him as your only source of salvation and blessing. If you are in a physically or emotionally difficult spot right now, refuse to become discouraged. Ask the Lord to reveal His plan for your life. Commit yourself fully to Him, no matter what it costs. God will provide for you in ways that far exceed human understanding.

    For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. . . . And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

    —JEREMIAH 29:11, 13

    Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

    —MATTHEW 7:7

    Give ear to my words, O LORD,

    Consider my meditation.

    Give heed to the voice of my cry,

    My King and my God,

    For to You I will pray.

    My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD;

    In the morning I will direct it to You,

    And I will look up.

    —PSALM 5:1–3

    He Asks for Patience

    As a father, there are many days you need patience with your children, with your spouse, in your work, and with the various circumstances you encounter in life. In James 1:2, you are encouraged to count it all joy when you fall into various trials. But
