*Not every poem included in this book is dated in chronological order.  This is not an oversight on my part. Rather, I have made changes and substitutions over the years.

    Oh, golden sunsets,

I can see you in the sky,

Knowing that you will not last long.

Soon, the night will take control

And lead us to into the darkness, but

One cannot help but wonder at your majesty,

As things jump into our heads

While we are in constant awe

    Of your beautiful azure.

There is not much else to do

During this time when we live—

For the anticipation, or savor the moment,

Which brings us to this state in our lives.

    Songs of My Youth

How fondly I remember the times

A little over ten years ago,

    When all that alternative music

Played in my head, the same kind

Of thing you said would damage my brain.

It did nothing of the sort, as you can see.

It enhanced my creativity and made me

Soar to heights that I never thought possible.

Some place, I don’t know where,

I hear and feel the airplane take off.

These people think they can drag me

Somewhere and make me use my resources.

Scratching to survive and find my way out.

You like to watch, then laugh right in

    My face.

How cruel and disgusting such a thing is.

    10/5/05

Slower now, I do not fear this

    Change because I know

    It will bring me peace—

Like to sway in the wind

As I am rocking in your arms

And listening to the train rattle by.

    Surveying my surroundings,

Like the fresh and inquisitive being

    That I am.

I know you like to think that about me

While I smile at myself inside.

Carry me back upstairs so I can look

    Out the window.

    10/5/05

    Back in time, even further

Than I thought I would go

    At the same time.

How did you feel when you

    Made this transition for the

    First time—

    Like your mind opened up

    To embrace the new experience

    That called your name.

    10/5/05

    Full of life, how else

    Could you be?

We have all this, we have

    Each other.

    Focus on the finer things

    Instead of being so consumed

    By thoughts of bitter hate.

Only having the chance to live once,

So take as much of that as you can

    Before all the happiness

    Starts to fade into nothing.

    10/5/05

    You came my way,

So I took you to claim as mine,

    My sweet honey pie;

    I love you!

    *dedicated to Travis Potts

    10/5/05

    Out to hunt, just like

    The man said you would.

    They had to take away
