This book is dedicated to my children, who are my inspiration for this book, and my husband, who has been my support.
Part 1
Julia
Chapter 1
Hi, my name is Julia. I have a secret. There is a portal in my basement. I mean a real, live, blinking, multicolored, sparkly magical portal. My older brother Benjamin and I came upon it by accident when we were playing in the basement, and he tried to throw a ball over my head. It hit my head (the ball was pretty soft, so it didn’t hurt much) and bounced into the corner behind the door. I went to get it and my hand momentarily disappeared into the portal that was next to the ball. I thought I was seeing things and asked my brother to have a look. Benjamin came over and put his hand next to the ball, and his hand disappeared too. He quickly took out his hand and it reappeared. He put his foot into the portal and it disappeared, and reappeared when he took it out. We were amazed. I mean, how many kids have a real live magical portal in their house?
My brother and I immediately tried to see how big it was. It was about ten inches off the ground and was hovering five feet tall. I knew this since we went to get a measuring tape and we started measuring. We also figured out that the shape of the portal was oval and not a square or rectangle. We waved our hands all over it and it disappeared and appeared in that shape.
Our next thought was, who was going to go through it first? If one of us went through it with our entire body, would we be able to get back? Should we poke our head into it to see what was on the other side?
We did rock, paper, scissors, and I was chosen to poke my head into the portal to see what was on the other side. As soon as I opened my eyes, I felt blinded by bright, white light. There was a long hallway and many bookcases filled with books. I told my brother and he also poked his head in to have a look.
This place doesn’t look so bad. What do you think? Should we go through the portal?
my brother asked.
I thought for a moment. What if we can’t come back?
I asked. Then I had a brilliant idea. Why don’t we hold hands, and one of us goes through it and the other stays behind? Then we can see if there is a portal to our house from the other end.
That’s a great idea, Julia,
my brother said.
We did rock, paper, scissors again, and this time Benjamin was chosen to go through to the other side. I held his right hand and he walked into the portal with his left arm outstretched. Here I go,
said Benjamin, and I could hear him say, Goooo
as he walked in. It was strange to see Benjamin’s arm just stretching out of thin air. I was holding his hand tightly since I didn’t want to lose him.
After a couple of minutes, he came back. There is a portal to come back home from the other side,
he said. So let’s go in and check out this place.
Are you sure this is going to be okay? Can we really come back?
I was hesitant.
Well, how about this? We can tie one end of a string to our waist and tie the other end of the string to that thing over there.
He pointed to a metal pole in our basement.
Okay, that sounds better, let’s do that,
I said. We went to look for two long strings and each attached
