Grim Deception - Adeara Allyne

You saw him burying a body?
Detective Lonnie Moberly could not believe what she was hearing.
Now, she consciously tried to keep her tone even and her voice level low as she asked again, You saw this man bury a body?
She ran her hand over the crumpled newspaper. It was from the day before and had a picture of university professor, Hopkins Lawrence.
And the evening had begun with such promise...
She'd gotten home early after visiting her dad in the nursing home. Rob Scott, the handsome hunk who was her across-the-yard neighbor had asked to come over and look through her home renovation magazines.
She'd taken him up to the loft, where she had her dressmaking studio.
He'd walked through it before, because her bedroom was on this level of the carriage house, but they hadn't spent time in it. He looked around with curiosity. The large space was dominated by a huge 4' x 8' table. He ran a hand over the unfamiliar surface and asked What is this?
That's my cutting table. I use it for lots of things but its main purpose is to provide a flat space to cut out patterns from fabric. The surface is a theater costume designer's trick. It's Homasote, a building material used for sound dampening. It's a fiber-based wall board, basically. It's been covered with muslin and then painted. It takes pins like a bulletin board. If you get to the point where it has too many holes in it, you just re-cover it another layer of muslin and paint it again.
Next he walked over and looked at her dress form. You actually use this? I mean I've seen them in movies and pictures but I didn't realize they were real...
She grinned. Oh, it's real all right. Clothing is three-dimensional. So basically you're taking the flat surface of fabric then cutting, piecing, and sewing it to fit a specific three-dimensional shape. Having a dress form to work on makes everything much easier.
He'd asked a few more questions, which she'd happily answered, and then he'd settled down to go through over twenty years of home reno magazines.
She'd had several large eBay purchases of vintage dress patterns which she needed to organize. They'd been working quietly for about twenty minutes when there was a knock at her door.
It was her cousin, LeRoi Johnson, with his best friend and roommate, Preston Landry. Preston had been visibly upset, clutching what seemed to be a folded up newspaper.
Cousin LeRoi apologized for the intrusion, but explained it was important.
She had taken Preston upstairs to the loft to provide a bit of privacy, while LeRoi and Rob stayed downstairs, talking softly. From the bit she heard, LeRoi was asking about Rob's huge renovation project on the Castle, an elaborate brick Victorian beauty.
You saw this man bury a body?
she asked again.
Preston nodded and she asked gently, When was this? And where?
It was right after LeRoi went to boot camp...
With his simple statement, the pieces fell into place. Preston and LeRoi, a study in contrasts, had been inseparable since kindergarten. They had been small, slender, easily bullied children, Preston white and LeRoi bi-racial. At the age of five, Preston had been slightly taller, and to everyone's amazement including his own, he'd come to LeRoi's rescue on the playground. They'd been joined at the hip all through school. At about eighth grade, Preston stopped growing and LeRoi soon towered over his best friend. After high school graduation, LeRoi entered the Marine Corps and left for boot camp right away.
The summer between high school and college, with LeRoi gone, Preston had been at loose ends -- really alone for the first time.
Once he started school, attending Central Kentucky University as a history major, things had gotten better. Between school and his part-time work at a nearby historic home, his time had been filled.
When LeRoi returned to Maybe, he'd begun working as a guide in the Daniel Boone National Forest and he and Preston became roommates.
Okay, I get it. Can you start at the beginning and take me through it? Tell me everything...
Preston nodded solemnly and swallowed hard. I was out in the woods, just walking...
The town of Maybe, Kentucky was surrounded by the immense and sometimes forbidding Daniel Boone National Forest. Going way back -- Lonnie thought it was to the 1920s, to Mama Grace and Mama Lily -- all of the members of the Moberly-Booker family were raised and trained to survive in the forest. Now, four or five generations on, the practice continued. While not everybody enjoyed hunting, every one of them was more than capable of spending a night or even several nights out in the wilderness.
When Lonnie and her cousins were growing up, Preston, as Cousin LeRoi's best friend, had been included in their forest outings.
Because of their familiarity with the forest, many of her family members headed to the woods when they had serious thinking to do. In fact, it was a practice Lonnie had returned to after coming back to live in Maybe. It made complete sense Preston would've been out in the woods by himself fifteen years ago, as he processed life while LeRoi was gone.
Preston finished his narration and Lonnie gave him a big hug.
It happened too late to make the paper, but Hopkins Lawrence died a couple of hours ago, so you don't need to be afraid of him. Now... I think we need to go downstairs and map this out. Are you comfortable if Rob is here for the discussion?
That's fine.
He smiled shyly. I like Rob.
LeRoi already had the topographic map spread out on the dining room table, along
