About this ebook

Our first reaction when the doctor says it's cancer: Why me?

Receiving a cancer diagnosis is traumatic, both for the person diagnosed and family and friends. Todd Outcalt writes from the perspective of a husband who has accompanied his wife, a breast cancer survivor, through her cancer journey.

Praying Through Cancer is a practical guide for anyone seeking strength, support, and hope for coping with cancer. This personal book addresses the raw emotions and deep questions evoked by cancer. Each devotion helps the reader encounter God through comforting scriptures, insightful reflections, and heartfelt prayers.

  • Daily readings provide an uplifting connection with God to help readers face their situation with faith and hope.
  • Reflection questions for family conversation or group discussion (especially cancer support groups).
  • The author shares wisdom from his pastoral counseling, plus his personal experience of supporting his wife as she lived with breast cancer.

The 28 Days of Prayer Series

Depending on who you ask, it takes 21-28 days to create a habit. The point is to commit for a consecutive number of days. This series follows the same concept. Each book is designed to cover a specific topic and help you develop a daily prayer practice that hopefully continues beyond the 28 days.

    About the Author

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Every book is a product of relationships, love, and experiences. This is especially true for this prayer guide, and I would like to thank the many friends (and, in some cases, families) who have shared their lives and stories with me. I also thank Upper Room Books—a ministry of resources and people that reaches around the world. And, as always, I thank my family for providing a small space to work and a larger space for love and laughter. My wife, Becky, continues to inspire me every day, and I thank her for sharing her cancer journey with me and with others.

    INTRODUCTION

In many ways, this is a very personal book. My wife is a fourteen-year breast cancer survivor, and as a pastor of thirty-five years, I have known hundreds of people who have made their own cancer journeys. Many are alive and still telling their stories; others are with the Lord.

My intent in writing this book is twofold. First, I hope to give cancer patients (and their families) a practical tool for prayer, reflection, and devotion over a four-week period. A month can be a significant chunk of time for someone diagnosed with cancer, and I hope this book provides a brief encounter with God—a promise, a testimony, a prayer—that lifts the spirit and enlivens the heart with courage and faith.

Second, I hope this book will kick-start some of the questions that all cancer patients eventually ask themselves: What does this experience mean? How will cancer change me? What is my purpose? What can I learn from this experience? What can I offer to others through this experience?

Although this book serves as a personal prayer guide, I trust that the daily Bible readings and reflection questions will make family conversation or group study possible. Cancer support groups may find this guide to be a
