CHAPTER 1: Mary’s Dream Job

Mary at work doing what she loves.

Ever since I was a little girl I’ve dreamed of two things: Working at a theme park and finding the man of my dreams. The first was easy and the latter has proven ‘challenging’ in all kinds of ways.

I flick through one of the small piles of fan mail that are heaped on the table I am sitting at. At the theme park I have become something of a jack of all trades and this evening I’m alone sorting through the various letters to the official characters of the park coming up to Easter. Each letter is scrawled in the cutest handwriting with kids from 5 to 15 writing in to request something special, sometimes ask a question or just say how much they loved their experience at the park.

As I like to do, I take my time reading each one. The one I am holding is from a little girl of about 7 years of age by the writing who is also named Mary. She writes about how her daddy bought her the most tasty salted pop corn and how she wants to come to the park for all of her birthdays in the future.

I lean back into the soft, worn out office chair and smile in satisfaction.

Things don’t get much better than this.

Reaching forward I pick up my warm hot toddy in the big mug I like to drink from and let out a long drawn out sigh. Reading so many words of praise like this makes me feel that I can’t believe I get paid to do this.

Behind me the door opens with a thud off the small stopper and my supervisor Steve strolls into the little mail room. He’s old, married and very amusing.

I look over my shoulder and hold up my cup.
