And I’m done waiting! Travis’s words echoed in Shelby’s mind as she stepped out the back door of her small cabin, a cup of coffee held between her hands.

Travis was still sleeping, after having done a thorough job of assuring himself that her injured shoulder was okay, and then carefully checking the rest of her person for any other injuries. He’d found none, but that hadn’t stopped him from running his hands all over her – multiple times throughout the night!

Travis was a bear shifter! Shelby took a deep breath and tried to martial her thoughts about the impact of that fact. Where did he come from? Why had he been able to mask his inner bear from her? What would life as his forever mate be like?

She lifted her head as the sound of an eagle captured her attention. The majestic bird flew high overhead, circling twice, before swooping down to land in the wildflowers about thirty yards from her cabin. The eagle was the animal shape of the Supreme Wizard of this part of the world. Word must have reached him about the poachers!

Shelby watched, transfixed, as the eagle stared back at her, and then the link was completed and she could hear the bird’s thoughts, as clearly as if he were speaking audibly to her.

Trouble is heading this way. The poachers were not working alone and reinforcements are enroute.

Shelby shook her head, answering the wizard carefully, They were dealt with. They had traps with them.

We know this. The man who hired them seeks to destroy all of the shifters. They must be stopped, but without further compromising our secrets."

The man who has hired the poachers needs the blood of a shifter to finish his spell. Once cast, it would keep any shifter pierced by the tainted arrows from shifting back to their human form or their animal form. They would become permanently stuck in whichever form they were in when the arrow struck.
