Mark 1
‘Make way for the Lord’
<1>I’m so excited to tell you the wonderful news of Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God. It started <2>as it’s written in the prophets Malachi and Isaiah: ‘Look! I – God – am sending my herald ahead of you. He will pave the way for you to come.’¹ <3>‘Listen to the voice in the wilderness shouting out this challenge: "Clear the way for the Lord: straighten out your lives to prepare for his coming!"’²
<4>A man named John appeared baptising in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. He came as a herald. His message was clear and direct: people had sinned by disobeying God. If people turned away from their sins and turned back to God, he would forgive them. They should then be baptised as a sign of their new commitment to God. <5>Vast crowds from all over the Judean countryside and the whole of Jerusalem flocked to where John was to meet him. Confessing their sins, they were baptised by him in the River Jordan. <6>Now John wore camel-hair clothes with a leather belt round his waist. He ate locusts and wild honey. His simple lifestyle recalled that of the Old Testament prophet Elijah. <7>He preached this message: ‘One is coming after me who is more powerful than me. I’m nothing compared with him. I’m not even worthy to bend down and untie his shoelaces! <8>I baptise you with water, but that baptism is only to make way for him to baptise you with the Holy Spirit, to immerse you into the life of the Spirit.’
‘You are my dear Son’
<9>In those days Jesus came from the little-known village of Nazareth in Galilee. He was baptised by John in the Jordan. By submitting to John’s baptism, Jesus identified himself with sinners. <10>As soon as he came up out of the water, Jesus saw heaven being torn apart and the Spirit coming down on him like a dove (maybe symbolising purity, gentleness and peacefulness). Just as the Spirit hovered over the waters at the beginning of creation, so the Spirit hovering over Jesus at his baptism marked the beginning of a new creation. <11>And God’s voice declared his love from heaven, ‘You are my dear Son; I take delight in you.’
<12>Next, the Holy Spirit sent Jesus out into the wilderness, away from all the people. <13>He was in the wilderness for 40 days, being tempted – yes, really tempted – by Satan. He was with the hyenas, jackals and other wild animals, and angels took care of him there.
‘God is breaking into this world’
<14>Some time later, after John the Baptist was arrested, Jesus went back to Galilee, announcing God’s wonderful news of salvation. <15>He declared the message, ‘The long-awaited time has arrived. God’s kingdom is coming. God’s sovereign reign is powerfully breaking into this world. Therefore turn back to God. Have a change of heart. Trust in the wonderful news! Commit yourselves to God.’
‘Follow me and become my apprentices’
<16>As Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon and Andrew, throwing their nets out into the lake. (They made their living from catching fish.) <17>Jesus said to them, ‘Make me your priority. Follow me and you’ll become my apprentices. Instead of gathering in fish, I’ll train you to gather in people.’ <18>Without a moment’s hesitation, the two of them left behind their fishing nets to follow Jesus. <19>Going on a little way, Jesus then saw two more brothers, James and John, who were Zebedee’s sons. They were in their boat mending their fishing nets to get ready for their next fishing trip. <20>Jesus immediately called them too, and they left behind their father Zebedee and his labourers in the boat and followed Jesus.
Jesus drives out an evil spirit
<21>Jesus and his followers went to Capernaum, an important town on the north-western shore of the Sea of Galilee. As soon as it was the Sabbath, Jesus went into the synagogue and started to teach. <22>His teaching caused a sensation: the people were astonished at his teaching, because they’d never heard anyone teach them with such authority, in stark contrast to the lack of authority of the teachers of the law. <23>Just then, a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit appeared and screamed, recognising who Jesus was, <24>‘What have you got to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Leave us alone! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God!’
<25>But Jesus commanded him firmly, ‘Silence! Come out of him!’ <26>The evil spirit then convulsed the man violently, shrieking desperately as it came out of him.
<27>Everyone was so awestruck that they asked one another, ‘What on earth is this? Is this a new teaching? What authority he has! He even commands evil spirits, and they obey him. Who is this man?’ <28>The result of this miracle was that in next to no time news about Jesus spread like wildfire throughout Galilee.
Jesus heals many people
<29>Next, directly after leaving the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. <30>Now Simon’s mother-in-law was lying in bed ill with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. <31>So Jesus went to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. Her fever disappeared instantly, and she began to serve them refreshments.
<32>That evening after sunset, the people brought to Jesus all those who were ill or who were demon-possessed. <33>It seemed as if the whole town crowded at the door of the house. <34>Jesus healed many who were ill with various diseases and he drove out many demons. But he would not allow the demons to speak because they knew who he was, the Son of God, the Messiah.
Jesus prays and preaches
<35>What was the secret of Jesus’ power in all his busyness? He made time to be with his Father. Very early the next morning, even while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house where he was staying and went off to a quiet place, where he prayed to his Father. <36>Simon and those who were with him wondered where Jesus was, so they went out to look for him. <37>When
