What is motivation?
Many lectures addressing young adults will likely include or stress motivational techniques. This is a word that is often loosely used in regular conversations, but what does motivation really mean? Why is it so important?
Motivation, in essence, describes one's ability to continuously be involved in activities on a long-term basis without giving up or slacking off. This is as a result of some inner drive to keep on doing and persisting regardless of the turmoil and challenges. Every activity that you endeavor in requires a spark to ignite its motion and keep it going, and this is where motivation plays its most important role.
Why is it so important?
The saying Life is a Journey
suggests that everyone has a mission, goal or dream that has to be achieved in this journey we call life. This requires one to take stock and realize what is important in their life and knowing where they want to be or what they want to achieve. Next, one has to put in the work to achieve this goal. Lastly, one has to keep on going no matter the challenges and never give up until the mission has been completed successfully. This is motivation!
Learning and adapting this skill from a young age prepares one to apply it in the future i.e. in the university you have to be motivated to complete your course work and projects. In internships or jobs, you have to be motivated to achieve and deliver the set of stipulated goals and assignments given to you by your superiors. This may even include your work as a volunteer-- which would require you to be motivated to help others and make an impact on their lives. Why are there so many selling books, workshops and talks on motivation? This is because it’s one of the most sought-after skills that give one a sense of purpose, direction and actual action which is key to every person’s life journey. Culturing it is an art form that undergoes constant refining to become a solid driving force.
