Self-Care and You - Kim Richards
The American Nurses Association (ANA) is the only full-service professional organization representing the interests of the nation’s 3.1 million registered nurses through its constituent/state nurses associations and its organizational affiliates. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.

The practice of self-care is a lifelong journey. Self-care means choosing behaviors that balance the effects of emotional and physical stressors. These behaviors can include exercising, eating nutritious foods, getting enough sleep, practicing self-centering activities, abstaining from substance abuse, and pursuing creative outlets.
If you want to live a life of meaningful contribution to others, you may need to make changes in your own life first. Many caregivers fall into the trap of over-giving and wrongfully believing that self-care is selfish. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Code of Ethics for Nurses clearly supports this: The nurse owes the same duty to self as to others, including the responsibility to preserve integrity and safety, to maintain competence, and to continue personal and professional growth
(ANA, 2001, p. 23). The reward for tending to your needs first is profound. You will find more passion, energy, and resilience to support making
