Anna was cold, and wet, and tired of every inanimate object trying to talk

She had been up all night, driven to walk into the misty darkness by forces she couldn’t explain, even to herself. They had taken her across the bridge from her Beacon Hill apartment, over I-90, and up onto Capitol Hill, a part of Emerald that she had rarely visited, and yet it felt like her destination.

Twice, she had seen someone flying overhead, but from down here, it had been impossible to say if it was a superhero on patrol or a villain escaping.

Somewhere, off to her right, she could feel the first inklings of dawn starting to rise above the horizon, even as clouds and drizzle kept her separated from the actual warmth of the coming sunlight. Across the lake, over the East Side, and up beyond the mountains where the world still ran wild and green.

She felt like a water-logged mouse, squelching noisily in her red Chuckie-T’s, rain shell dripping and jeans soaked. She flicked her medium-cut black hair back out of her eyes with one hand and sprayed a nearby light pole with more water.
