    CHAPTER 1

    Nath’s feet sank into the mud as he descended down a steep hill. Raindrops the size of coins pounded the path, turning the dirt into mud. Water dripped from his red hair, and his clothing clung to his body like an icy, damp skin. Ah, I just got dried off an hour ago, and now this again! It rains, it stops. It rains, it stops. It’s been like this for two days!

    Ah, quit your bellyaching, Brenwar said. The black-bearded dwarf was about ten paces behind Nath. His stubby hands grabbed at the saplings. He wobbled a bit as his boot slipped in the mud. Ack!

    Don’t fall, Brenwar. Remember the last time you fell? It was a doozy. Nath stopped in place, shielded his eyes, and glanced into the sky. The storm clouds moved quickly, but there was no thunder. Nightfall was coming. The rain that hit his face felt like tiny slaps. He shook his head. I guess we’re going to have to go without a fire tonight too.

    Dwarves don’t need fire, and they don’t require much sleep either. Brenwar splashed through the sloppy mud. He combed
