To everyone who has inspired me one way or the other, thank you. This book is dedicated to my sister Francis 'Philomena' Opeyemi, on whose birthday this book was published. I love you sister.
CHAPTER ONE
Femi was having a bad day, and he knew exactly why. The day was just starting, but he wished it would just end, so he'd gotten this visit over with. He was on his way to see his mum, and one could guess from the look on his face that they were not on good terms. It was the first time he was going to see her in three years, and the woman had to whine and whine to get him to make the visit. It wasn't that Femi was a wicked son, he was just a man running away from something.
The driver of the taxi who seemed to be in his forties, dressed in a black shirt and jeans, seemed bent on irritating Femi with his cheerfulness. He had been upbeat and in the mood to chat ever since Femi stepped into the taxi. He had tried to ignore him at first, but the man just kept talking. At a point he decided to respond to him as best as he could, but he got lost on the way, it was like the man was having the conversation with himself more than he was talking to Femi.
To make things worse, the radio was blaring. The man must really love noise, Femi thought, he couldn't bear the radio being this loud in his own car. He wished he had come in his car, but he couldn't, the Honda Accord had betrayed him that morning while he was about to go out, it had developed the same issue it had been having since Femi bought it-battery. Femi had no choice but to take public transport, and this one's supposed to be private.
No woman no cry
Bob Marley's voice intruded Femi's thought as the driver moved and grooved to his morning dose of noise, and force-fed Femi with it.
Can you bring that down, please.
Femi said, leaning forward from the backseat to catch the taxi driver's attention.
Sure, sorry sir.
The driver said, turning the volume knob of the car stereo.
Thank you, that's much better.
Femi said, inhaling deeply, as the taxi pulled into the street his family house was located, the street in which he had grown up.
Help! Hellllllllppppppppp!
A young boy screamed from the side of the road, he seemed to be running away from something, or someone, but no one was seen running after him. It was night, and it was really cold, and the boy had only a short and a singlet on, his face was covered in tears and bruises of where an adult hand had been recently, his knee was bleeding badly, he must have fallen while he was running and hurt his leg.
Somebody help me!
He screamed, but there was no one around to heed his call.
One could see lights turning on from the windows of houses on the street, but none came out to help the boy, until the man caught up with
