Someone hit a bass drum with a tractor-trailer. Something

like

Boom.

Jocelyn snapped her board up and stopped with a quick spin, letting her duffle bag kind of wind her around as it settled. Late Tuesday afternoon, downtown Emerald, early spring. Wet and kinda yucky. Just enough drizzle that her normally-spiky, black hair was a squishy helmet.

She was wearing jeans and twenty-ring boots, with a rain shell over her sweatshirt today. Just another tiny, Chinese-American girl, like so much of Emerald.

Something flashed by on her left, the street side, as she was up the bumpy sidewalk to avoid walkers. Whatever it was slammed into a white panel truck parked half a block up. Flipped it on
