The Wonders Of Crockpot Cooking
For the average American who works more than 40 hours a week, crockpot slow- cooking is a welcome development. It meals are versatile and budget-friendly. However, its ease of use is its main attraction. Simply put your ingredients in it, leave home and return to a tasty meal.
Crockpot was introduced for slow cooking in 1971. Over the years its use has continued to expand, with many manufacturers introducing stylish designs and recent innovations to make slow cooking an easier and more convenient task. These include multiple settings, digital displays as well as dual dials to set both heat level and cooking time.
Others are programmable timers to lower heat to warm once the cooking time is over; divided crocks for preparing more than one kind of food at a time and cookers with multiple crock sizes to enhance versatility and save storage space.

Tips for General Use
Do not stir ingredients while cooking. The heat loss from this action leads to an increase in cooking time.
When cooking soups and stews, crockpot must be at least half full to cook well. If it is less than half full, cooking time will also be less, so you may have to check for doneness sooner.
Never fill a crockpot to the top; let there be at least a 2-inch space between the top of the crock and the lid so they will be enough space for simmering.
Thaw frozen meats before cooking in crockpot. To avoid overcooking, thawed, frozen vegetables should be added at the last 15-20 minutes of cooking time.
Use foil handles to remove whole roast and chicken from crockpot.
To thicken juices when it is too watery after the recipe is done, simply turn the crockpot to high, cover and cook for 10 minutes. Add 2 tablespoons flour or 1 tablespoon cornstarch with ¼ cup cold water per 1 cup of juice. Stir for 2 or 3 minutes or until thickened. Alternatively, uncover pot and cook on high for 20-30 minutes or to desired consistency.
